Salisbury’s Alexandra Drye and Madeline Hoskins won the NCHSAA 2A Doubles Title on Saturday at The Cary Tennis Center.
Drye and Hoskins defeated Carrboro’s Danielle Sawyer and Olivia Shaheen in the semifinals 6-1, 6-0. In the finals Drye and Hoskins faced defending 2A State Doubles Champions Taylor Snowden and Emma McLeod of Brevard. Drye and Hoskins, both seniors, raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and never looked back taking the first set 6-1.
“That first set was the best high school women’s doubles I’ve seen,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said.
In the second set Drye and Hoskins started slowly falling in a 2-1 hole but quickly recaptured the form they displayed in the first set to take the second set 6-2 and claim the State Title.
“It’s special to win a state title but it means a lot more winning it with Madeline,” Drye said. “We have been together four years and to share the title with her makes it that much more special”
“The finals match just proved how much we have improved since our first match together,” Hoskins said.
Salisbury’s Kayla Honeycutt and Anna Flynn lost out in the semis to Snowden and McLeod by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
“They were right their for the finals cheering louder than anyone for Alexandra and Madeline,” Maddox said.
All four made the all-state team. Kathryn Rusher and Grace Steinman joined the four to make the all-region Team as well. This is the first time in 2A Midwest play a school has earned the one and two seeds in both singles and doubles.
Salisbury continues in the dual-team playoffs against Hendersonville on Monday at Salisbury. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
