Rockwell-based Crash Morrison Garbage Service Inc. has confirmed it has gone out of business, according to an official in one town that contracted with the company until it suddenly stopped collecting trash this week.
Meanwhile, other garbage collection companies with similar names are reassuring customers they will still be picking up their trash.
Company owner Crash Morrison has not explained to customers why the business is folding after more than a decade. The company called its municipal clients Monday to inform them of service interruption.
Morrison has not responded to inquiries from the Post.
China Grove Town Manager Ken Deal said he spoke with Crash Morrison and company Vice President Joanna Morrison Tuesday, and they confirmed the business has shut down.
The business has provided the town with two garbage collection trucks at no cost so town workers can pick up garbage for the next two days. Deal said town leaders were simply trying to come up with a solution.
“Our main concern is that we take care of our citizens,” Deal said.
The town will keep the same collection schedule as the Rockwell business used for the last few years. China Grove employees will collect both garbage and recycling on one side of town today and the other side of town on Thursday.
The town has turned its contract over to its attorney, Tom Brooke, for review “to see if there is anything legally we can do,” Deal said.
China Grove is in talks with Landis, which also used the garbage service, to see if the neighboring town could help until there is a more permanent plan in place.
Landis public works and fire department employees spent Monday collecting garbage for the whole town, said Town Manager Reed Linn.
Linn said the employees finished gathering all of the garbage between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.
“When we used to do garbage, we collected every day. We did one day because customers are used to having everything collected in one day,” Linn said.
He said there were a few customers whose trash was not collected Monday, but a crew was able to pick up the garbage Tuesday. The same crew collected the recycling Tuesday.
Rowan County has several garbage collection services with “Morrison” in the name, and the others have had calls from concerned customers. But they say Crash Morrison’s problems have nothing to do with them.
Donnie Morrison Garbage Service, a Cleveland-based trash removal service, is still open for business, the company says. The company also operates Think Green Recycling.
Morrison’s Garbage Service, based in Salisbury, also continues serving its customers.
Neither of those companies is affiliated with Crash Morrison.
The town of Landis has called a special meeting today to discuss options regarding the town’s garbage contract with the Rockwell company.
The meeting is open to the public and will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Town Hall, 312 S. Main Street.
