The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education recognized the following students and staff members at the September regular meeting:
• Cleveland Elementary School is one of 174 schools from across the state to be recognized as a Title 1 Reward School based on performance during the 2011-12 school year and the two previous years. Cleveland demonstrated the highest performance over a number of years for all subgroups, including the all students group, on statewide assessments.
• The Rowan-Salisbury School System is the recipient of the 2013-2014 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) Grant as approved by the NC.. State Board of Education. Student Services Director Carol Ann Houpe is the administrator.
• Rowan-Salisbury School System employees may be nominated to receive the Customer Service Award, which recognizes employees for achieving excellent customer service. Anyone may nominate a school system employee for this honor. Forms are located on the website at www.rss.k12.nc.us. Employees nominated for the month of September are:
1. Janet Mitchell, Southeast Middle School teacher, coach, co-Athletic director
2. Emily Shue, Overton Elementary School media specialist
3. Leigh Graham, West Rowan High School media specialist
4. Karen Russell, Erwin Middle School secretary
5. Erich Epps, West Rowan Middle School teacher
• South Rowan High School student Andrew Mullis received first place in the National Skills USA Competition for masonry held this summer in Kansas City. The South Rowan Masonry Teacher is Ronnie Miller.
• South Rowan High School teacher David Overcash received recognition from the NC Agricultural Teachers Association for his outstanding, exemplary and professional leadership while serving as the NCATA President for 2012-13.
• South Rowan High School received the 2013 N.C. Outstanding Middle/Secondary School Agricultural Education Program award, presented by the National Association of Agricultural Educators. Laura Allen is the agricultural education and FAA teacher.
• West Rowan, Jesse C. Carson and Salisbury high schools were recognized by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) as being “ejection free” for the 2012-2103 school year.
• Five Rowan-Salisbury schools were awarded the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant for the 2013-14 school year. They are North Rowan, Koontz, Isenberg, Hanford Dole and Knollwood elementary schools. Knollwood has been added back on as a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable School. Libby Post is the school system’s child nutrition director.
