SHS tennis wraps 8-0 CCC season

Salisbury’s girls tennis team won 9-0 against North Rowan on Wednesday and finished the CCC season 8-0. The Hornets won 71 of 72 sets in league play
Alexandra Drye, Kayla Honeycutt, Anna Flynn, Kathryn Rusher, Grace Steinman and Kathleen Mowery won singles matches against the Cavaliers. Honeycutt-Flynn, Rusher-Drye and Mowery-Steinman won in doubles.
Salisbury plans to play Charlotte Catholic twice today at home, starting at 3:30 p.m. The teams will finish a suspended match from earlier in the season and then will play the regular match.
Salisbury is ranked No. 1 in 2A. Catholic is ranked fourth in 4A.
• Salisbury’s tennis record over recent decades is even better than we thought.
While Salisbury’s 2002 team lost twice to Lexington in CCC play, the Hornets won five league matches between those two losses.
So Salisbury’s girls tennis record in its last 261 conference games — CCC, SPC and YVC — dating back to a run that started in the 1989 season is 259-2 after Wednesday’s North match.
Salisbury has won 128 straight in league play.

In the EGolf Tour’s Salisbury Classic being held at the Country Club of Salisbury, the first-round leaders are Christian Brand and Daniel Stanly with 63s.
Will Collins and Frank Adams shot 68s. Johnny Kyger shot 69.
• Ken Crooms made his eighth career hole-in-one on Wednesday at Corbin Hills.
Crooms used a 7-iron to ace the 155-yard No. 2 hole.
Witnessing the shot were David Roueche, Steve Robinson and Don Carter.
• Seventy-eight GARS members played in foursomes at Lexington Golf Club.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 63.22 was Clayton Steele. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 66.43 was Andy Griffin. Low ‘C’ player with a net of 65.11 was Ton Longo. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 69.70 was John Daniels.
Livingstone swept Voorhees 25-7, 30-28 and 25-21 on Wednesday in New Trent Gym.
Shedella Smith had 11 kills and four blocks to lead the Blue Bears (12-7).
Livingstone is at J.C. Smith tonight.
North Rowan’s eighth-graders won 42-0 against China Grove.
Xavier Haley rushed for 144 yards on only five carries and scored two TDs. Jaden Jones had 91 yards on three carries and scored two TDs.
Josh Ellis and Shy’Kim Coney also rushed for touchdowns for the Mavericks. Jacob Young kicked three PATs.
Defensive leaders for the Mavericks inclued Brett Lawson, Dawson Hoover and Shonton Hoosier. Tyreze Lawrence and Elijah Sturdivant made interceptions.
North (4-0) hosts Corriher-Lipe Wednesday.
Salisbury Academy won 8-0 against Parkwood.
George Fisher had three goals for the Jaguars. Mitch Jeter and Jeremiah Whitaker had two each. Dominic Capito had one.
Emily Mann had the shutout in goal. Adam Drye and Ben Coulter were defensive standouts.
The East Rowan YMCA has started registering players for fall sports.
• Little Shooters basketball is for pre-K to first grade and introduces basketball. Register through Oct. 26. Practice starts Nov. 4. The season begins Nov. 18.

• A boys basketball league for grades 2-8 is coming. Registration will begin Nov. 2.

In trap shooting, Jared Pettet has won the NC State ATA Junior singles and doubles championships.
He won the NC State High All Around Junior championship, the Watauga Gun Club ATA Junior championship, the Buncombe Cunty Gun Club HOA championship, the Junior and Class D championship in the Carolina Clays Benefit Shoot, the Glen Miller Memorial Ironman championship, the NC Hall of Fame handicap and singles championships, the NC Aim Youth Handicap Junior championship and the Southern Zone Dixie Handicap Junior championship.
He won first place in varsity team Scholastic Clay Target Program events in Rose Hill and Durham.
He was tourney class champion and Junior high overall champion in Primland.
In CCC cross country action, girls results from Tuesday were: West Davidson 23, East Davidson 50, Salisbury 83, North Rowan 104, Thomasville 131.
Boys results were: Salisbury 34, West Davidson 49, North Rowan 93, Thomasville 99, East Davidson 122, Lexington 132.
West Davidson’s Callie Wynn was the individual girls winner in 22:11, with Salisbury’s Susannah Dixon second in 22:34.
Ashlyn Mills paced North Rowan with a 10th-place finish in 25:14.
Philip Simons (18:40) and David Uto (19:16) finished 1-2 for Salisbury’s boys. Max Patel was ninth (20:07), Matt Washko was 10th (20:15) and Jeryon Davis was 12th (20:38).
Francisco Nunez was 11th (20:31) and led North.
Catawba’s women’s soccer team romped 7-0 against Chowan on Wednesday.
Amy Iwanicki started the scoring for the Indians.
Chowan did not have any shots.

• Catawba’s men’s soccer team rolled 12-0 against Chowan.
Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) scored twice, as did Ian Orr, Matt Wilkinson and Domhnall Minogue. Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) made three saves.
