Livingstone’s men’s basketball team was picked to finish second in the Southern Division at Thursday’s media day in Charlotte.
Returning all-conference picks Mark Thomas (18.6 ppg) and Jody Hill Jr. (14.0) are on the preseason All-CIAA team,
Livingstone is coming off a 22-7 season, won the Southern Division and was runner-up in the CIAA tournament.
Winston-Salem State was picked first in the Southern Division. Bowie State was picked first in the Northern Division.
• Livingstone’s women were picked to finish sixth in the Southern Division.
The Blue Bears are coming off an 8-17 season.
Shaw was picked to win the Southern Division. Elizabeth City State was picked to win the Northern Division.
East Rowan’s tennis team (11-1, 8-0) finished its SPC season with a perfect record by beating South Rowan 9-0 on Wednesday.
Lizzie Weaver, Rebecca Agner, Laura Agner, Lauren Thomas, Drew Pethel and Emma Ritchie were singles winners. Weaver-Laura Agner, Rebecca Agner-Thomas and Pethel-Ritchie won in doubles.
The SPC tournament is Tuesday at Myers Park in Concord.
• Salisbury’s girls tennis team lost 5-4 to Charlotte Catholic on Thursday.
Kayla Honeycutt, Kathryn Rusher and Grace Steinman won in singles for the Hornets, and the doubles team of Rusher-Steinman won.
Charlotte Catholic is ranked No. 4 in 4A, while Salisbury is No. 1 in 2A.
“It was a great match played by two great teams,” SHS coach Scott Maddox said. “I’m happy with how we’re playing right now, and the timing couldn’t be better. We’ve played tough matches against strong competition. Hopefully, that has prepared us for what is ahead.”
•The CCC tournament will begin on Monday at p.m. at the Bingham Tennis Center in Lexington.
The top three place-winners in singles and doubles will qualify for the Midwest Regional to be held at Catawba on Oct. 18 and 19. The tournament will feature the # five-time defending state champion Salisbury team. Also participating are West Davidson, Lexington, East Davidson and North Rowan.
Singless players include Kathryn Rusher (S), Grace Steinman (S), Olivia Varner (WD), Hannah Shawley (WD), Sheldan Bailey (L), Kerrigan Ellison (L), KK Porter (ED), Haley Poole (ED), Victoria Scheve (NR) and Katelyn Parker (NR). Doubles participates are Alexandra Drye/Madeline Hoskins (S), Kayla Honeycutt/Anna Flynn (S), Rachel Trexler/Casey Coble (WD), Miranda Legg/Rachel Salinas (WD), Emerson Hayes/Maggie Lancaster (L), Ashley Phillips/Sydney Parker (L), Ashley Taylor/Brooklyn Hopkins (ED), Beth Trotter/Stephanie Harris (ED), Veronica Leasure/Samantha Pritchard (NR) and Alexis Rice/Indya Wiggins (NR).
Rounds one and two will be played on Monday with semifinals and finals Tuesday.
Carson’s boys soccer team won 6-0 against West Rowan in SPC play on Thursday.
Khalid Myers started the scoring for the Cougars. Goals by Colton Correll and Yobany Perez gave the Cougars a 3-0 halftime lead.
Ivan Hernandez, Pedro Perez and Aaron Lippard scored in the second half.
Correll and Brandon Flores had assists.
Carson is at Hickory Ridge Tuesday.
Salisbury swept Thomasville in a CCC match on Thursday.
Nysia Harris had nine kills and nine blocks. Juliana Anderson had six kills and seven blocks. Lora Withers had seven aces. Mary Seifert had the match-ending kill and led in assists, along with Olivia Smith. Emma Labovitz had 16 digs, and Abby Lee had 12.
• Salisbury’s jayvees lost 2-1. Lainy Slate had three aces and 12 digs. Other SHS leaders were Katie Bullock, Caroline Forbis and Makayla Dillon.
• North Rowan (8-8, 7-1) stayed tied for first in the CCC by beating East Davidson 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15
Carson’s jayvees won 28-18 against West Rowan Thursday as QB Andy Lear rushed for 150 yards.
Armoni Hogue had scoring runs of 6 and 12 yards for the Cougars. Austin Lear scored on an 8-yard run, and Dalton Cauble’s 21-yard scoring run put the Cougars (4-1) ahead to stay. Cole Howard kicked four PATS.
Carson’s defense was led by Conner Wilson, Tanner Christy, Brandon Mock and Jacob McCurry. Alex Deal recovered a fumble.
For West, Juwan Houston caught two TD passes. Lee Poteat threw one, and Kortez Weeks threw the other. Javon Quarles had a rushing touchdown.
• Salisbury’s jayvees lost 38-14 to unbeaten Southeast Guilford on Thursday at Ludwig Stadium.
Tyquan Jones threw a 66-yard TD pass to Will Steinman. Marcus Corry had a 7-yard scoring run. Matt Woolly kicked two PATS.
• A.L. Brown won 27-8 against Vance, with Vance scoring in the final seconds.
Jalen Cagle scored two TDs for the Wonders (5-1). Robert Lyles and Jamorya Cousins had a touchdown apiece. “Our defense was lights-out,” assistant coach Chip English said.
• East Rowan won 15-12 against Hickory Ridge, and South lost 44-8 to Cox Mill.
Devin Turner scored four touchdowns on runs of 5, 37, 47 and 48 yards as West Rowan Middle’s eighth-graders beat Southeast 50-16.
West’s offense rolled for 385 yards.
Brandon Wallace had a 25-yard scoring run, Rick Phelps had a 49-yard run, and Malcolm Ingram had a 33-yard scoring run. Bryant Young threw two conversion passes to Owen White.
Zarrek Barger, Ethan Adkins, Caleb Link, Phillip McDaniel, Eli Walton and Nick Newton led the blocking.
Defensive leaders for the Bulldogs (4-0) were Anthony Renegar, Brandon Wallace, Luke Hager, Zach Owen, White and Turner.
Jay Wilkerson scored on a 3-yard run for the Patriots. Cole Sifford threw a 46-yard scoring pass to Elijah Moss. Daniel Carrillo kicked two conversions, good for two points each.
• Knox’s eighth-graders rolled 42-0 against Corriher-Lipe. Defensive standouts Tevin Mullenax, Nimely Davis, Jaquan Davis, Raquan Mashore and Torri James combined for 18 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
Joe Steinman intercepted a pass. The defense scored a safety and caused four turnovers.
Griffen Myers threw touchdown passes to Jaleel Webster and Jordon Jones and a conversion pass to Steinman. Nick Austin had rushing touchdowns of 61 and 54 yards.
Isaac Baker and Cortez Watkins also ran for touchdowns. Contributing on 2-point plays were Webster, Myers, Tyvion Wood and Tyress Mashore.
Blocking standouts were Tyquan Smith, Jayden Brown, Jordan Ward, Rondarius Peele, John Pruitt and Fernando Ortiz.
In the eGolf Tour’s Salisbury Classic at the Country Club of Salisbury, Will Collins has shot 68-65 — 133. At 9-under, Collins is five shots off the pace set by Daniel Stanley. Stanley has shot 63-65 — 128.
Frank Adams shot 2-under but did not make the cut. Johnny Kyger was at 5-over after two rounds.
• The Country Club of Salisbury will dedicate a new practice facility on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 8:30 a.m., prior to the “Brawl in he Fall” club event.
• The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played its weekly tournament earlier this week.
The format was Point Play.

Carolyn Reis won. She was followed by Joy Maughmer, Bev Cobb, Norma Burgess, Sheryl Johnson, Joan Haville and Sharon Skinner.
Treva Honeycutt won putts.

• The Civitan Golf Club will host its 38th annual Civitan Golf Classic on Friday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Proceeds benefit Civitan scholarships and causes.

Pfeiffer’s women’s tennis team beat Catawba 9-0 on Thursday.
Tiffany Brooks (South Rowan) had seven kills for Catawba Valley Community College in a sweep of Wake Tech.
Brooks also had seven kills as the Bucs (26-0) swept Guilford Tech.
Erwin won its 10th game by beating North Rowan Middle. Singles winners for the Eagles were Angel Scialdone, Mia Graham, Laura Weisensel, Destini Hamilton, Kristen Brady and O’Shannus Wood.
Doubles winners were Weisensel, Victoria Plyler, Brady and Sydney Taylor.
• Knox won 7-2 against Southeast. Rachel Seifert, Bethanie Stauffer, Skye Mowery, Saleema Sabadaka and Maleah Corpening were singles winners.
Doubles winners were Seifert-Mowery and Stauffer-Sabadaka.
