Area athletes update …

Virginia’s Kevin Parks (West Rowan) scored two touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards in Saturday’s 48-27 loss to Ball State.
Parks had a 2-yard scoring run for a 10-7 lead and another 2-yard TD for a 24-24 tie, but Virginia didn’t finish the game well.
Parks added three receptions for 25 yards.
Parks has 398 rushing yards and five TDs this season.
•South Carolina State defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) missed several games with an ankle injury, but he’s starting to make an impact.
Hargrave made four tackles in Saturday’s 29-24 win against North Carolina A&T. He had two tackles for loss, including a 9-yard sack.
• Charlotte’s Kalif Phillips (A.L. Brown) had a 6-yard scoring run and rushed 14 times for 75 yards in Charlotte’s wild 53-51 win against Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
• Chris Smith (West) had two tackles, one for loss, in Arkansas’ SEC setback against Florida.
• Darien Rankin (Salisbury) made two tackles for UNC in Saturday’s loss to Virginia Tech. Romar Morris (Salisbury) is still limited by an injury and had only two carries for 2 yards.
• Former A.L. Brown quarterback Martel Campbell is playing wide receiver at Davidson and is having some success. Campbell had three catches for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Wildcats’ recent loss to Lenoir-Rhyne.
Campbell was named to the Pioneer League All-Academic team last season.
• West Virginia lost 73-42 at Baylor on Saturday, but not every tackle was missed. Linebacker Jared Barber (Davie) again led the Mountaineers. He was in on 11 stops and was the primary tackler eight times.
• Western Michigan true freshman Keion Adams (Salisbury) started at defensive end in Saturday’s loss to Toledo. Adams, listed at 6-3, 230, made one tackle.
• Western Carolina’s Shaun Warren (Carson) had a 14-yard reception, 7 yards rushing and returned two kickoffs for a total of 49 yards in a loss to Chattanooga.
• Former North Rowan offensive lineman Will Robertson is on the team at Appalachian State, along with former SHS Hornets Justin Ruffin and Parker McKeithan, although this probably will be a redshirt year.
• Liberty’s Gerald Holt (A.L. Brown) made four tackles in a 21-17 loss to Old Dominion.
• Hunter Morris (A.L. Brown) has recovered from the broken leg that wiped out his senior prep season and is long-snapping for The Citadel. He played in Saturday’s overtime win against Appalachian State.
• Quentin Sifford (West) made two tackles and recorded his second sack of the season for West Liberty in a 27-14 loss to FCS school Duquesne. Sifford has 12 tackles this season.
• Ike Whitaker (Salisbury) rushed five times for 22 yards as Lenoir-Rhyne rolled 41-0 against Brevard. Andrew Leslie (A.L. Brown) and Zach Long (Davie) made tackles for the Bears, who are still unbeaten in the SAC.
• Timmy Pangburn (West) started at right guard for Catawba in Saturday’s loss at Tusculum. Joe Watson (Davie) caught a 44-yard TD pass for the Indians. Desmond Lackey (Davie) made a tackle. Trey Mashore (West) caught two passes for 10 yards.
• Long snapper T.J. Bell (Carson) made a tackle for Wingate on punt coverage in Saturday’s SAC loss to Newberry. Wingate is at Catawba this Saturday.
• Johnson C. Smith kicker Erick Amaya (A.L. Brown) was 7-for-7 on PATs, as the Golden Bulls crushed Lincoln 49-10. Former Wonder DBs J.P. Lott and Jamar Clemmons made tackles for the Bulls.
• It was a quiet day for John Knox (Salisbury). He started at receiver and had three catches for 5 yards in Charleston’s 28-9 loss to Shepherd.
• Guilford’s Adam Smith was held to one catch for 7 yards, but Guilford won 16-7 Saturday against Washington & Lee. Smith is 11th in receiving in the ODAC with 16 catches for 186 yards and one TD.
• Averett lost 48-0 to Maryville on Saturday, despite a good game by cornerback Zachary Grkman (Carson). Grkman made seven tackles and forced a fumble. Dontae Gilbert (Carson) made three tackles and broke up a pass. Hobie Proctor (West) only got to kick off once for Averett. It went 54 yards. Dante Pinkston (A.L. Brown) ran back two kickoffs for a total of 32 yards.
Cody McNeely (West Rowan) was the fifth scorer for Lees-McRae as the Bobcats won the Conference Carolinas Preview in Concord.
McNeely finished 13th in 17:28, and the Bobcats won the meet.
In fall softball, UNC Greensboro freshman Sidney Grkman (Carson) went 3-for-4 in her first game. The Spartans beat Charlotte.
Taylor Whitley (Carson) is a candidate for player of the week in the ODAC. Whitley had 46 assists, 13 digs and five kills in a 3-2 win over Methodist, and he had 30 assists, nine digs and four kills in a sweep of Eastern Mennonite.
Whitley is fourth in the ODAC in assists.
• Averett’s Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) leads the USA South Conference with 9.79 assists per set.
• Amanda Possidente (East Rowan) made five digs as Brevard beat Coker on Saturday in SAC volleyball.
• Lela Moore (West Rowan) had 28 assists and eight digs, but Hollins lost two games Saturday against Washington & Lee and Marymount.
Caroline Cozart (Davie) played No. 5 singles for Catawba on Saturday at Barton.
Caroline Graham (Salisbury) is 1-1 in doubles for the Indians.
Catawba’s Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) ranks fourth in the SAC with a stroke average of 76.8.
Kennedy and the Indians will be in action today in Myrtle Beach.
