Churches host special services, guest pastors

First United Church of Christ, 207 W. Horah St., will celebrate the Commissioning of Youth on Sunday at 11 a.m. Eleven youth and three adults will leave Sunday afternoon to travel to John’s River Valley Camp in Cullowhee for Mission Week Camp. They will work with other youth and adults working on homes and providing care for special needs in the Appalachian Mountains.

CHINA GROVE — The Rev. Jimmy Faggart will serve as the guest pastor at South China Grove Methodist Church, 501 Haney St., during the 9:30 a.m. worship service Sunday.
ATC Ministries,1915-1917 W. Innes St., Ste. 103, will be hosting family and friends dress down from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Immediately after the service, meet at Kelsey Scott Park for games of softball, food, and fellowship. The theme is “Cook Out will all the Trimmings.” Advance tickets are $8 for adults and $3 for children age 3 to 8. Tickets will be $7 at the door with donations of can goods and package foods. Proceeds go to ATC Pantry Fund.

SPENCER– Guest speaker at Spencer Presbyterian Church, 113 First St., at the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday will be Dr. James Beard from Thyatira Presbyterian Church. Beard retired in 2013 as professor of chemistry after 25 years of service at Catawba College.
The church is located across from the entrance of The North Carolina Transportation Museum off of Salisbury Avenue.
WOODLEAF— Needmore Baptist Church, 1620 Mt. Vernon Road, will celebrate homecoming Sunday at 11 a.m. with guest speaker Rev. Benny Vickery of Lexington. A covered dish lunch will be served at noon.

The Youth and Congregation of Word of Life Family Worship Center, 726 E. Liberty St., will host its 2013 Youth Conference “Letting Our Light’s Shine: Transforming A New Generation” Friday through Sunday, July 19-21.
Conference activities will begin at 7 p.m. Friday with a panel discussion conducted by the youth. Outdoor activities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with food, fun, games and music by gospel recording artist Trina Moore, and a youth talent show at 6 p.m. that day.
At the 10 a.m. Sunday service, the children and youth will lead Praise and Worship, and provide special music.
Sunday’s speaker will be Brian K. Freeland Sr. of Charlotte. He is an educational activist, teacher and administrator with special emphasis on the plight of black males.
