North Rowan graduate and former Catawba QB Daniel Griffith has been hired as a P.E. teacher and coach at 4A Scotland County, a state-title contender, in Laurinburg.
Griffith was a receiver most of his career at North and caught four touchdown passes as a junior in 2005.
In 2006, he had an opportunity to play quarterback for the Cavaliers and turned in one of the finest seasons in county history. He completed 173 of 352 passes for 2,810 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 465 yards and another eight TDs.
In one stretch that season, Griffith threw for 200-plus yards in six consecutive games.
Grifith threw for a career-best 319 yards and four touchdowns in a playoff victory against Surry Central. He was named Rowan County Player of the Year — a serious feat since the competition included West’s freshman running back K.P. Parks.
Griffith also was a fine basketball player at North. He averaged 11.1 points as an all-county senior.
Griffith didn’t have a lot of playing opportunities for Catawba’s football program — twice the Indians brought in Division I QBs — but he proved a capable backup and threw five TD passes for the Indians.
Former East Rowan runner Kristen Hatley will compete for Pfeiffer’s cross country team.
Hatley was one of four recruits announced by Pfeiffer on Wednesday. She’s transferring from Charlotte and is pursuing a nursing degree at Pfeiffer.
Hatley was seventh in the 1600 in the 2011 Rowan County Track Meet and was eighth in the 1600 in the 2010 county meet.
She was a regional qualifier several seasons in cross country.
Brittini Young has been named as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Gardner-Webb.
Young has been a graduate assistant coach the past two seasons at Columbus State.
Young played her freshman year in high school at East Rowan. Her father, Jim Young, coached at Davie County and East Rowan.
Young went on to a stellar high school career at Eastern Randolph.
She starred in college at Mars Hill. In her senior year, she averaged 17.6 points per game, led the SAC in 3-point percentage and finished second in assists and free-throw percentage. She set five school records at Mars Hill and is fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,731 points.
Gardner-Webb’s roster includes two former Salisbury players — rising junior Jessica Heilig and rising sophomore Doreen Richardson.
Appalachian State quarterback Jamal Londry-Jackson was named the Southern Conference’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown, Catawba) improved to 8-0 on Tuesday when the Asheboro Copperheads beat the Gastonia Grizzlies 3-2 at McCrary Park.
Tuttle pitched six innings for the Copperheads (27-14).

• Noah Holmes (East Rowan, Appalachian State) had four hits, including a double, for the Peninsula Oilers in the Alaska Baseball League.
Holmes also has made the local paper in Alaska for his off-field efforts as a bear tracker and hunter.
• Andy Austin (East, UNC Wilmington) is batting .227 for the Covington Lumberjacks in the Valley League.
Austin has four doubles and two triples.
Jerry Sands (Catawba) is in Charlotte today.
Sands and the Indianapolis Indians are scheduled to play a doubleheader today aginst the Charlotte Knights after Wednesday’s game was washed out.
The doubleheader starts at 5:45 p.m.
• The Kannapolis Intimidators were off Wednesday. They return to action tonight at home against Hickory at 7:05 p.m.
• Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) had a scoreless appearance for Johnson City in his last relief outing.
Lomascolo has a high ERA (5.91), but he’s struck out 15 batters in 10 2/3 innings.
• Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus, Charlotte) hit his third homer of the season on Tuesday.
Seager is batting .254 with 14 RBIs in 30 games.
• Jordan Jankowski (Catawba) is 3-1 with three saves for Quad Cities.
He has 76 strikeouts and only 17 walks.
The state tournament starts Friday at Wilson’s Fleming Stadium.
Area III representatives Kernersville and Randolph County have two of the best records in the field, along with Area IV champion Shelby.
Two of the eight teams — Jacksonville and host Wilson — have losing records.
Keep an eye on the Friday morning matchup between Kernersville and Shelby.

The Concord-based Team NC (coached by Chip Furr) won its bracket in the Atlanta Legacy Showcase Tournament.
Carson’s Lacee Hunsucker and West Rowan’s Hunter Gibbons helped the team win four of five games and tie the other one.
Hunsucker pitched 12 innings and struck out 13, Gibbons batted .500 with two homers, a triple, a double and six RBIs.
The team, which has players from eight counties, was 21-7-3 for the showcase season.
Hunsucker was 14-3 in the circle with two saves. She struck out 71 and had an ERA of 1.29.
Gibbons batted .412 for the summer with five homers, five triples, nine doubles and 35 RBIs.
• Davie County’s Morgan Hendrix verbally committed to Wingate.
Hendrix batted .488, scored 30 runs and stole 27 bases.
She was Central Piedmont Conference Player of the Year and made All-State teams.
In U.S. Amateur Championship sectional qualifying held at Whispering Pines, Alex Nianouris (Salisbury, Davidson) shot 76-72 — 148 and tied for 22nd. Three players qualified, and two alternates were named. Salisbury’s Bill Haynes shot 88-78 — 166.
Spencer Little League will be holding registration at the 8th Street Ballpark in Spencer on Fridays, Aug. 2 and 9, from 4-7 p.m. and Saturdays, August 3 and 10, from 9 until noon.

China Grove

China Grove youth baseball and softball registrations will be taken at Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove until August 15.
Fees are $40 until August 15. Leagues offered are 5/6 Coach Pitch; 7/8 Coach Pitch; 9/10 baseball, and 11/12 baseball. Softball leagues are 5/6/7; 8/9/10 and 11/12/13.
