AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — New efforts by the Obama administration to put Texas back under voting rights laws knocked down by the Supreme Court has other states waiting to see if they’re next.
The Justice Department wants Texas to continue seeking federal preapproval to change voting laws. That’s despite justices stripping that requirement from the Voting Rights Act last month.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says Texas “will not be our last” when it comes to seeking voter protections in other states.
Holder didn’t say what other states might be targeted. But some say North Carolina could be next after its state legislature this week sent sweeping voting law changes to the desk of Republican Gov. Pat McCrory.
Republican leaders in Alabama are also digging in for another possible round with the Justice Department.
