CHARLOTTE (AP) — The city of Charlotte is invoking its extraordinary event ordinance for the Fourth of July fireworks show and related activities in the downtown area.
The Charlotte Observer reports that City Manager Ron Carlee made the declaration, which bans people from bringing a range of items into a certain area. The declaration also gives police more latitude to stop people who appear to have one of those items.
A memo notes that nearly 100,000 people have come to downtown Charlotte in previous years. Seven adults were arrested during the July 4 festivities last year. In 2011, there were four adult arrests and 11 juvenile curfew violations.
The rules that took effect ahead of last year’s Democratic National Convention have been used for Bank of America and Duke Energy shareholder meetings.
