Brown worked at Granite Tire for 15 years before he bought it. The business will host Customer Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday with free food, drinks, door prizes and specials.

SALISBURY — Mark Curran, the president and CEO of Lion’s Share Credit Union in Salisbury, recently earned the Credit Union Person of the Year Award.
Curran received the award from the Northwest Chapter of the N.C. Credit Union League.
The chapter selected Curran for the award based on his 35-year track record of excellence in the credit union movement.
Curran’s career began as a teller at Coastal FCU in 1978 and includes stints at the S.C. Credit Union League and CUNA Mutual Group. Lion’s Share FCU named Curran president and CEO in 2011.
In addition to his service to credit unions, Curran is a frequent volunteer at Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman. In eight years, he has volunteered at the camp nearly 40 times.

SALISBURY — The fall Belk Charity Sale from 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday will benefit thousands of schools and charitable organizations across the South.
In return for purchasing a $5 ticket, customers get deals on rarely discounted merchandise and other items throughout the store. They also receive a $5 credit on charity sale purchases, which offsets the cost of the ticket.
Charities get to keep 100 percent of the proceeds from each $5 ticket sold.
The first 100 customers in each store on the morning of the sale will receive free Belk gift cards ranging in value from $5 to $100 and a chance to win one of three $1,000 Belk gift cards awarded company-wide.
Charity sale tickets are being sold by participating non-profit organizations and at Belk stores.
All revenues from in-store ticket purchases are equally divided among participating charities and schools in each local store.
The spring charity sale raised more than $5 million for nearly 8,000 schools and community nonprofit organizations in Belk markets.
The Salisbury Belk has moved to Wallace Commons on Klumac Road.
SALISBURY — John Helms with Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has been awarded a professional degree in the field of long-term care and is now certified.
The program Helms completed is independent of the insurance industry and focuses on providing financial service professionals the tools needed to meet clients’ long-term care needs. SALISBURY — Bottom Dollar Food, a grocery chain based in Salisbury and owned by Food Lion parent Delhaize, opened two stores last week in Philadelphia suburbs.
The new locations give Bottom Dollar 43 stores in Pennsylvania and 62 stores in all, including locations in New Jersey and Ohio.
“There has been a great deal of anticipation for the openings of the Germantown and Ambler stores,” Bottom Dollar Food President Meg Ham said in a press release. “At Bottom Dollar Food, we are excited to deliver unbelievably low prices on fresh produce, quality meats and the private and national brands that matter most to our customers.
“We look forward to bringing our ‘We Won’t Be Beat’ price guarantee to customers in Germantown and Ambler and being a great partner in these communities.”
The first 200 customers at the new locations, both about 18,000 square feet, received free groceries. The two new stores added about 100 jobs to the greater Philadelphia economy.
SALISBURY — A new program sponsored by Subway restaurants has local leaders heading into classrooms to inspire students to be healthy and active, every day.
Beginning on National Eating Healthy Day Nov. 6 and continuing until Thanksgiving, more than 14,000 students in Charlotte region classrooms will begin tracking their healthy eating and physical activity choices.
More than 50,000 students in the Carolinas region are participating in the challenge.
Local leaders will join students in Fit for Life 15 Day Challenge and provide motivation along the way as “fit buddies.”
They include Coach Mallory Hodge of Salisbury High School going to Overton Elementary School in Salisbury.
According to the American Heart Association, 68 percent of adults and 33 percent of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese.

Daimler Trucks, parent company of the Freightliner truck manufacturing plant in Cleveland, received 369 orders from two Mexican firms for Freightliner trucks. The trucks will be built in Mexico.
Daimler Trucks Mexico, a commercial vehicle division of German automaker Daimler, is delivering the orders from Mexican companies Arca Continental and Transmex.
Arca Continental has ordered 273 trucks and Transmex has ordered 96 trucks. Deliveries will run through the end of 2013.
Arca Continental is a beverage bottling company in Latin America. Transmex, a transport operations company, will bring its total transport fleet to nearly 650 Freightliner trucks.
