Mall could provide solution for all
In my opinion we have a lot of smart people representing us on the County Commission, Salisbury City Council and Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education. It seems apparent that no one wants to get along with each other on a new school administration building. If it weren’t for disagreements among these boards, those of us who take the Salisbury Post wouldn’t have anything to read. Regardless of who’s right or wrong, we don’t look very united to surrounding counties.
Obviously, locating the school office downtown would be wonderful for merchants who’ve remained downtown. However, this should not benefit the merchants, commissioners, City Council or Board of Education. This is a major investment for the citizens of Salisbury/Rowan, and the judgment about its location obviously should be to benefit all the people of Salisbury/Rowan, including teachers and administrators.
May I make a suggestion as a merchant, father, grandfather and investor? Why can’t the three boards meet and buy the Salisbury Mall together, which would benefit all the people of the city and county? Let the school system come first and use the square footage it needs, and then let the county use the rest for its purposes.
It seems so simple and would be much more economical, with plenty of space and parking. To me, this would be the ideal answer to all the problems. Above all, wouldn’t this be the perfect situation to give all three boards an opportunity to work together rather than working against each other?
I see both sides, and I think both sides are correct in their decisions. However, we’re at a stalemate and still talking, not moving forward. This reminds me that when I opened my first store in the Empire Hotel building, the city and county were talking of renovations. Well, it’s 45 years later, and they are still talking, and the “old building” is still deteriorating. Let’s move forward, folks!
