North Rowan outfielder Chance Mazza has been chosen to play in the Blue-Grey North Carolina Classic that will be held in Greensboro at NewBridge Bank Park on Aug. 3-4.
The classic is a showcase for professional and college scouts, and a nine-inning game will be played both days. Numerous major league players have participated in past Blue-Grey Classic events, including David Price, Justin Upton, Billy Butler and Ryan Zimemrman.
Mazza batted .378 for North as a junior and led the Cavaliers in RBIs and steals. He’s been all-county the past two seasons.
Kannapolis’ Rick Lewallen is competing in the CPGA Senior Championships at Pine Island Country Club.
Lewallen shot 72 in the first round on Tuesday and is tied for 16th, six shots off the pace.
Lewallen also competed in the recent British Senior Open at Royal Birkdale and shot two 75s. He missed the cut by two strokes.
•In the Carolinas Junior Championship at Willow Creek in High Point on Tuesday, South Rowan’s Davis Richards shot 73. Salisbury’s Eric Edwards shot 80.
• The Corbin Hills women played a low net event on Tuesday. Low gross was won by Phyllis Durland. She was followed by Beth Calhoun, Kristi Laton and Treva Honeycutt.
Ruth Bowles won low net. She was followed by Margaret Meek, Becky Isenhour and Betsey Edgeworth.
Low putts was won by Susan Wydner, with Mary Seaford second.
• In the Twin States Junior Girls Golf Championship at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher shot a first-round 73 Tuesday and is tied for fifth.
• Seventy GARS members played in foursomes at Lexington Golf Club on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 66.42 was Mickey Ousley. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 67.35 was Gary Morgan. Low ‘C” Flight player with a net of 70.51 was Melvin McGee. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 66.83 was Buddy Lowman.
Garner had its protest of a forfeit for not having enough players in uniform upheld on Tuesday morning by the national committee, but then it lost 8-4 on the field to Randolph County and was eliminated from the state tournament in Wilson.
Randolph was, in turn, eliminated by a 6-1 loss to Area III rival Kernersville, although Randolph’s season is not over. Randolph is the host team for the upcoming Southeast Regional.
Kernersville and Wilmington will play for the state title today at 1 p.m., with the winner joining Randolph County in the regional and the loser calling it a season.
South Carolina State rising sophomore Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) is rated the 35th-best FCS defensive tackle by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview.
The Kannapolis Intimidators dropped a 1-0 pitching duel against the Lexington Legends on Tuesday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
Mike Recchia pitched six shutout innings for Kannapolis, but Lexington won on an error in the seventh.
Former Carson-Newman hurler Steve Cishek was named the National League’s co-pitcher of the week.
Cishek is the closer for the Miami Marlins. He had five saves last week.
For the second straight weekend, the Punishers 8U softball team captured the championship in Top Gun Youth Softball.
The Punishers won the Summer World Series aon July 21 at Rocky River, defeating Harrisburg’s Crimson Craze 8-7. Madelyn Voncannon scored the winning run on a single by Emma Clarke, capping a comeback from a 7-0 deficit. The Punishers beat the Carolina Starz 10-0 to advance to the championship.
On July 28, the Punishers defeated the Mooresville Lady Legends 9-3 to win the Top Gun Summer Shootout at Hurley Park. Kenadi Sproul had a home run as the Punishers went undefeated in pool play to advance to the championship.
The Punishers are led by Head Coach Elizabeth Clarke, assistants Ray Graham and Rocky Durham.
The North Rowan High School Booster Club will meet on Monday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium. New members are welcome and are encouraged to attend.
The 13th Salisbury-Rowan Sports Hall of Fame inductions are set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, at the Salisbury Civic Center.
Greg Poole, Antione Sifford, Justus Everett, Brian Boltz, the late Bill Peeler and the late Jesse Corry Jr. will be the inductees.
Corry will be the recipient of the Horace Billings Lifetime Achievement Award.
Peeler was a fine athlete and a legendary coach. Boltz will be honored for his baseball accomplishments. Sifford starred in college basketball, while Poole and Everett were ACC football standouts.
Carson soccer tryouts will be held on Thursday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 6-8 p.m. This is for jayvee and varsity.
• Carson volleyball will travel to Cornelius Hough on Aug. 8.
• Carson male runners need to contact coach Bob Marchinko at 704-855-7165 if they plan to compete in cross country this fall. Athletes will need a current physical on a NCHSAA form before they can train with the team. Practice starts on Aug. 1 at 9 a.m.
Rowan Little League is accepting sign-ups at Godley’s Garden Center through Aug. 24 for fall baseball and girls softball leagues.

• China Grove youth baseball and softball registrations will be taken at Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove until August 15.
Fees are $40 until August 15. Leagues offered are 5/6 Coach Pitch; 7/8 Coach Pitch; 9/10 baseball, and 11/12 baseball. Softball leagues are 5/6/7; 8/9/10 and 11/12/13.

It’s time to gear up for the 2013 South Rowan Raiders football season.
Returning reserved seat ticket holders will have first option to purchase their tickets again Aug. 1 – Aug. 8 in the main office (no Fridays) from 11-1 or 6-8 p.m.
