CHINA GROVE — A worship service for Epiphany and the Gifts of the Magi will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 6 at Mount Zion United Church of Christ. Haven Lutheran Church will host a joint Epiphany Service with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 10:30 a.m. The service will be held at Haven Lutheran Church, 207 West Harrison St. Danny Key, Haven’s Choir Master, will direct a joint choir comprised of St. Paul’s and Haven members. St. Paul’s Choir Master and organist, John Bullock will serve as organist. The Rev. Ed Harper, interim pastor at Haven, will serve as liturgist and the Rev. Rick Williams, Vicar at St. Paul’s, will preach.
Following the service, participants will process to St. Paul Episcopal Church, 930 South Main St., for the Burning of the Greens and the sharing of the Kings Cake. The Burning of the Greens is traditionally held on the twelfth day of Christmas. Participants are invited to bring wreaths, Christmas tree greens and garlands which will be burned. The Kings Cake, also known as the Three Kings Cake, is associated with Epiphany and often contains a small trinket of the infant Jesus. The person who selects a slice containing the trinket is traditionally afforded special privileges and responsibilities.

LINWOOD — Union Chapel AME Zion Church, 4329 Sowers Road, will host its second annual Gospel Fest on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m., with groups such as the Zionettes of Union Chapel, Cedar Grove Gospel Singers, Disciples of Joy, Heavenly Voices, and more. Evangelist Alice Perry will be the mistress of ceremony for this event, which will serve as a fundraiser for the Steward Board of Union Chapel. All are welcome to attend and participate.
