SALISBURY — The Rowan County American Legion baseball team lost to Kannapolis in extra innings at Newman Park on Thursday.

Rowan scored four runs in the first inning and led 7-1 after three innings, but wasn’t able to hold on.

Rowan (2-1) used six pitchers. Casey Crawford started. Zander Burton (0-1), who took the mound to start the eighth, took the loss.

Aiden Schenck had three hits for Rowan. Cole Johnson, Casey Gouge and Jackson Deal had two hits each.

Johnson and Gouge drove in two runs apiece. Deal, Gouge and Elijah Palmer had doubles.

Connor Welker had three hits for Kannapolis (3-1). Joe Javier and Trace Humberger had two each.

Rowan led 7-2 going to the fifth, but a six-run inning by the visitors swung the game.

Down 8-7 in the seventh, Rowan got a two-out infield hit from Blake Hill and Palmer’s clutch double to send the game to extra innings.

Kannapolis scored the decisive run in the eighth when Isaiah Black walked, reached third on  hit by Welker and scored on Humberger’s sacrifice fly.

Cameron Burrows pitched well in relief of Brandon Moore for 3 2/3 innings and gave Post 115 a chance to rally. Shawn Wedvick was credited with the win.
