KANNAPOLIS — A woman in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed Sunday evening while crossing North Cannon Boulevard in Kannapolis.
Dee Christy Shuping, 60, of North Cannon Boulevard, was attempting to cross the highway at the Solution Works Drive intersection when she was hit by a car traveling south, Kannapolis police said in a press release. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers of the Kannapolis Police Department responded around 6:30 p.m. Sunday to investigate the call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Based on witness statements and evidence collection, police said, it appeared that Shuping attempted to cross the southbound lanes while the traffic signals would not allow her to cross. She had begun to cross from the northbound lanes.
Oscar Daniel Lopez, 17, of Mary Wynn Court, was driving the 1992 Nissan 300 involved in the crash. No charges have been filed against Lopez, and neither speed nor alcohol is suspected as a contributor to this accident.
