West girls tied for No. 1 with N. Nash

In the new NCPreps.com poll that was released on Monday night, West Rowan’s girls are tied with Northern Nash for the top ranking in the 3A poll.
Both teams are undefeated and received 127 points in the voting. Hickory, ranked third with one loss, got 111 points.
West got nine first-place votes out of 14 cast by a statewide panel of media members, while Northern Nash received four. Hickory got one first-place vote.
The poll is in today’s Scoreboard.
• In the 1A boys poll, North Rowan remains fourth behind once-beaten Winston-Salem Prep, unbeaten Plymouth and Rocky Mount Prep.
W-S Prep got 13 first-place votes, while Plymouth got one.
Albemarle is ranked eighth.
• In the 3A boys poll, Concord is ranked first and Statesville is ranked second.
Concord got 12 first-place votes, while the Greyhounds picked up the other two.
• Davie moved up a notch to fifth in the 4A boys poll.
Mount Tabor is ranked second in the 4A boys poll but took its first loss on Monday in a Martin Luther King Classic game played in Greensboro.
Oxford J.F. Webb, No. 5 in 3A, beat Mount Tabor 64-63. Webb led 40-22 at halftime and was able to hang on.
Leo Brunelli, who has coached at Davie and North Stanly, is Webb’s coach.
• There is a full slate of prep games on tap for tonight as local teams finally return to action after the exams break and weather postponements.
College basketball
Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team lost 76-68 to Barton in a Conference Carolinas game played on Monday in Wilson.
Pfeiffer outshot the league-leading Bulldogs (12-2, 7-1) but committed 20 turnovers.
Josh Humphrey scored 21 points and had nine rebounds for the Falcons (3-13, 1-8). A.J. Clark added 19 points.
• Pfeiffer’s women’s team shot 29 percent in the second half and lost 58-55 to Barton.
Christina Harvey scored 16 for the Falcons (11-3, 6-3), while Jodie Lemons scored 15 and Brittany Cox 14.
Harvey and Lemons had 10 rebounds each.
• Dip Metres logged his 200th coaching win for Augusta State’s men’s program on Monday when the Jaguars beat Georgia College 69-44.
Metres was a college roommate of West Rowan coach Mike Gurley when they played at Belmont Abbey.
Former West stars Keshun Sherrill and K.J. Sherrill are redshirting at Augusta State, and the brothers will be playing for Metres next season.
8th-grade basketball
Action resumes in the middle school tournament today with semifinal doubleheaders at China Grove and Southeast.
At Southeast, it’s a Mooresville-North Rowan Middle twin bill, with the girls game starting at 4:30 p.m. and the boys game set for 6 p.m.
Mooresville’s top-seeded boys are unbeaten.
At China Grove, Knox plays Erwin in a 4:30 p.m. girls contest. Both teams were 12-2 in the regular season and tied with top-seeded Mooresville for first place.
The 6 p.m. game at China Grove features the Knox boys against West Rowan Middle.
The championship games will be played at China Grove on Wednesday.
Carson girls clinic
The Carson girls basketball team wil hold a clinic this Saturday at Carson.
A clinic for elementary school players will be held from 9-12.
A clinic for middle school girls will be held from 1-4.
The cost is $15.
