Catawba’s women’s basketball team let a lead slip away, but then rallied to beat Lincoln Memorial 60-56 on the road on Saturday night.
Catawba (16-10, 12-6) secured third place in the SAC.
Catawba trailed by six with 4:34 left, but the Indians scored the next 12 points.
Taylor May (South Rowan) made the field goal that started the comeback. Antoinette McPhail put Catawba ahead 52-51 with a 3-pointer and her three-point play stretched the Indians’ lead to four.
Chloe Bully scored 22 points for the Indians.
May scored 10. McPhail had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Kelsey Bradford scored 16 for the Railsplitters (14-14, 7-11).
Catawba will be at home on Wednesday in the SAC tournament at 7 p.m. against No. 6 seed Tusculum.

CIAA women

Crystal Wilson and Crystal Harris scored 18 points each and led Shaw’s women’s basketball team to a 72-53 win against Fayetteville State in Saturday’s CIAA championship game in Charlotte.
It was the third straight CIAA women’s title for Shaw.
Akysia Resper scored 16 for the Broncos.

Catawba men

Catawba’s men’s basketball team lost 82-65 at 12th-ranked Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
The Railsplitters (22-4, 15-3) won the SAC regular-season championship by one game over Anderson and Wingate. LMU will enter the upcoming SAC tournament with a six-game winning streak.
Lincoln Memorial was able to overcome 23 points and 12 rebounds by Catawba’s Tyrece Little.
Lee Martin scored 17 for the Indians. Vismantas Marijosius (North Hills) had nine points and nine rebounds.
Catawba’s talented freshman guards Reggie Perkins and Elon Edwards had one of their down nights, combining to shoot 2-for-20.
Catawba trailed 42-25 at halftime.
Catawba’s defense wasn’t bad and it made only seven turnovers, but the Indians (9-17, 6-12) couldn’t overcome 34-percent shooting and 2-for-13 accuracy on 3s.
Lincoln Memorial put five in double figures, led by Vincent Bailey’s 17 off the bench.
Lincoln Memorial got 31 points from its bench.
It’s a new season for the Indians now. They’ll try to start over in the SAC tournament.
They are seeded seventh and will play at No. 2 Anderson at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Lincoln Memorial will host No. 8 seed Tusculum.

Catawba baseball

Catawba’s baseball team finished a three-game sweep at Anderson by beating the Trojans 12-2 and 12-6 on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Catawba (13-4, 5-4 SAC) dropped to 26th nationally after being swept at Newberry last weekend.
In the opener, RBI doubles in the first inning by Ethan Satterfield and Paul Kronenfeld got the Indians rolling.
Chris Dula’s grand slam in the fourth inning blew it open.
John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) pitched eight innings for the win. Tuttle (3-2) had 10 strikeouts and no walks.
Dula had three hits. Satterfield, Keaton Hawks and Julio Zubillaga (Carson) had two apiece.
Catawba smacked three two-run homers in the nightcap, with Craig Brooks, Hawks and Kronenfeld going deep.
Hawks had a huge nightcap, driving in five runs.
Ross Whitley (3-0) struggled in the first inning but pitched into the fifth. Ryan McClintock earned a save.
Catawba plays at USC Aiken on Tuesday.

Catawba lacrosse

Lenoir-Rhyne scored a man-up goal 24 seconds into overtime and beat Catawba 12-11 on Saturday at Moretz Stadium in Hickory.
Catawba (2-2, 0-1 Deep South Conference) had erased a three-goal deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime.
John Scheich led the 11th-ranked Indians with three goals and two assists.
Sam Ashton scored three times for the Bears (2-3, 1-0).

Prep basketball

North Rowan’s boys (27-3) will play against top-ranked Winston-Salem Prep (29-1) in a 1A Western Regional semifinal on Friday at UNC Greensboro.
Tipoff will be at 8:30 p.m.

Both are unbeaten against 1A competition.
Third-ranked North has won its last 19 games. Winston-Salem Prep also owns a 19-game winning streak.
Prep’s last loss was to 4A Mount Tabor in the final of the Frank Spencer Christmas tournament. North’s last loss was to 4A Davie in the final of the Sam Moir Christmas Classic.
Whoever wins will have a quick turnaround. The regional final will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
In Friday’s other 1A Western Regional semifinal, 10th-ranked Hendersonville (24-3) takes on unranked East Surry (18-11) at 7 p.m.

Prep wrestling

While North Rowan won the state title in the 1A individual tournament in Greensboro on Saturday, Winston-Salem Parkland won its seventh state tournament team title in two different classifications in the last eight years, and its third in the last four years at the 4A level.
Parkland and Fayetteville Jack Britt placed 1-2, just as they had been two weeks ago in the dual team championships.
Parkland scored 133 points to 112 for Britt, followed by Lake Norman (82) , Cornelius W.A. Hough (75.5) and defending champ Southern Pines Pinecrest (75).
Nick Kee of Scotland County was the champion in the 170-pound class for the second straight year and finished the season 61-0 to earn Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.
• Hillsborough Orange rolled to its second consecutive 3A tournament championship by virtue of having nine wrestlers remaining in Saturday’s action, including four in the championship finals.
The Panthers collected 106.5 points to 98 for second-place Concord Jay Robinson.
North Gaston was third with 86.5 points, followed by Hickory St. Stephens (78) and Cameron Union Pines (65).
Carson placed eighth. East Rowan was 10th. South Rowan tied for 12th.
Enka’s Kacee Hutchinson, the 195-pound champion, was voted the 3A Most Outstanding Wrestler.
• Newport Croatan captured the 2A team title for the third time in four years with a total of 120.5 points, with Newton-Conover the runner-up at 100. The Red Devils defeated Croatan by a single point in the 2A dual team championships two weeks ago.
Defending tournament champion Trinity, which had the most wrestlers of any 2A school in the championship finals with three, was tied for third with Monroe Piedmont at 83 points.
One of the outstanding 2A finals occurred at 146 pounds, as Chase senior Josh Stephens completed a 52-0 season by outpointing Ashe County’s Michael Elliott (46-2) 10-8.
West Lincoln’s Clay Alguire, the 138-pound champion, was the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 2A event.
• In the 1A classification, three schools entered the championship round within three team points of one another: North Rowan, Ayden-Grifton and West Wilkes, although Ayden-Grifton had one more wrestler in the championship round than the other two. When it was over, North Rowan rallied to win with 88.5 points, a three-point margin over defending champ West Wilkes. Ayden-Grifton was third with 74, followed by Robbinsville (70.5) and Hendersonville (59).
Jorge Lima of West Wilkes, the champ at 145 pounds, was named the 1A Most Outstanding Wrestler.
