Catawba announced its 2013 football schedule, for the first season under new head coach Curtis Walker.

Of the 11 games on the schedule, six will be played at Shuford Stadium on Kirkland Field. One of the away games is the Mayor’s Cup Game at Livingstone

No new teams are on the schedule for the upcoming season, just a reverse of home and away sites from 2012. The SAC has reshuffled the league rotation, but Catawba will still open league play with Newberry in Week 3.

The season opens on Sept. 7 at home against West Liberty and concludes at home on Nov. 16 against Lenoir-Rhyne.

Prep basketball

A.L. Brown’s Derrick Copeland was named SPC Player of the Year for boys basketball.

A.L. Brown’s Tevin Stark also made All-SPC.

Other members of the All-SPC boys team are Concord’s Connor Burchfield, Reid Aube, Darren Black and Jerry Burk; Northwest Cabarrus’ Andrew Wheet and J.D. Murray; Cox Mill’s Matt Morgan; Robinson’s Jordan McKenzie and William Scott, and Hickory Ridge’s Nick Hough.

McKenzie is the son of former East Rowan and Northwest Cabarrus coach Greg McKenzie. Hough is the brother of former East standout Jared Hough.

• A.L. Brown’s Aiatana Grant and Raven Phifer were named to the All-SPC team. Central Cabarrus’ Divonnie Powell was SPC Player of the Year.

Others on the All-SPC team are Robinson’s Madison Fulford, Kelsi Mahoney and Rachel Cook; Concord’s Danica Ford and Nakiah Black; Northwest’s Shatiya Bost; Hickory Rigge’s Kiana Davis; Cox Mill’s Aaliyah Earl, and Mount Pleasant’s Victoria Harper.

Prep soccer

West Rowan’s girls soccer team stayed undefeated with a 3-2 win against Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.

Mariah Coleman had three assists for the Falcons.

Kelly Boley scored two goals, and Josie Heglar scored her first career goal.

In the absence of senior captain and center back Kayla Boley, the Falcons took a 3-0 lead into the final five minutes behind strong defensive performances by Toni Lucente, Claudia Patterson, Meagan Osian and Rebecca Parker.

The Falcons will play again on Wednesday as they open NPC play against West Iredell at home at 6 p.m.

• Salisbury’s girls soccer team welcomed home former SHS assistant coach Taylor Strode and his Concord Spiders on Monday.

The Hornets won 6-0.

Scoring for the Hornets were Kristel Rodriguez, Kate Grant, Kayla Honeycutt, Allie Murphy, Emma Labovitz and freshman Amelia Steinman.

Grant, Murphy and Labovitz scored their first goals of the season, while Steinman scored the first of her career.

Honeycutt had three assists. Grant and and Elle Wimmer had one each.

Salisbury (2-1) takes on Ledford tonight at Ludwig Stadium.

• North Rowan beat North Moore 1-0 in YVC play on Monday.

“We came out in the first half and let them dictate the pace and out-hustle us, but luckily our defense shut them out,” North coach Sallie Hundley said. “ At halftime, we challenged the girls to pick up the intensity, and they responded with a goal eight minutes into the half.”

Senior Vendela Sisomphou got the goal on an assist from senior Dakota Honeycutt.

Desiree Rincon earned her second straight shutout in goal with several nice saves.

North Rowan is off to a 2-0 start in the YVC.

• East Rowan lost 3-1 to North Iredell in NPC action on Monday.

Tara Wood scored a goal for the Mustangs to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Susan~Barker Fowler played well on defense and Kennedy Lambert was stout in goal for the Mustangs.

Prep tennis

East Rowan’s boys tennis team rolled 8-1 against North Iredell in NPC play on Monday.

Hello,

Ike Emerson, Justin Allen, Evan Rogers, Cameron Thomas and Chance Brown won singles matches for East.

Allen-Rogers, Emerson-Thomas and Jeremy Price-Brown swept doubles.

Prep baseball

Braxton Shetley was the winning pitcher, and Trevor Jones, Tyler Stroup, Nick Williams and Ryan McIntyre had two hits each in East Davidson’s 4-3 win against Southern Guilford on Monday.

Prep golf

South Rown shot 162 and won a match at Warrior with Cox Mill (178) and A.L. Brown (221) on Monday.

South’s Davis Richards was medalist with a sizzling 33.

Evan Neas (39), Josh Pope (42) and Aaron Rousey (48) were the Raiders’ other scorers.

Justin Westveer shot 42 to lead the Chargers. Zack Martens shot 52 to lead the Wonders.

South is at Mooresville today.

Prep softball

Carson-East Rowan has been postponed to Thursday at Carson.

7th-grade boys hoops

Knox won 48-45 in overtime against Southeast on Monday.

It was the first loss of the season for the Patriots.

Jamarius Hairston led the Patriots with 17 points.

Cameron Prugh scored nine, and Jailen Williams had seven.

Both teams have one league loss. Southeast plays Mooresville on Thursday.

7th-grade girls hoops

China Grove won 31-22 against Mooresville.

Leading scorers for the Red Devils were Anne Marie Turney with 12 points and Riley Corriher with eight.

Leading Scorers for Mooresville were Raegan Wayne with six and Jaden Horton with five.

• Southeast’s girls won 33-21 against Knox.

Olivia Gabriel and Alexandra Linder scored 10 points apiece to lead the Patriots.

Samantha Sebastian, Shaleah Jolly, Maren Shumaker and Payton Robertson also played well for Southeast.

Local golf

Michael Childress won the National Junior Golf Tournament held at Sapona Ridge on March 2-3.

Childress shot 79-79 — 158 to win the 12-13 age group by seven shots and also won the overall tournament by seven shots.

He will play again this weekend at the North Carolina Junior Golf Foundation tournament at Duke University.

Catawba athletics

Catawba’s tennis teams won on Monday at Hilton Head, S.C.

Catawba’s men beat St. John Fisher 7-2 to improve to 8-4.

Catawba’s women won 9-0 against St. John Fisher to improve to 9-3.

• USC Aiken’s J. P. Soles shot 67 at the Country Club of Salisbury in the first round of the Richard Rendleman Invitational on Monday.

Catawba is the host. The event concludes today. USC Aiken leads the team standings at 289. Anderson is at 292.Catawba is tied for ninth at 302.

• Catawba’s softball team went 3-1 over the weekend in a tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. Catawba (16-6) got a three-run homer by Carley Tysinger in a 9-3 opening win against North Greenville. Emily B. Huneycutt was the winning pitcher.

Catawba lost 1-0 to Bellarmine despite a no-hitter by Tysinger.

Amanda Terry’s two-run single provided a 4-3 win against Ohio Dominican, and Tysinger shut out Lander 1-0. Mollie Kovalcin drove in the game’s only run.
