SPENCER — North Rowan’s boys put up 89 points on Tuesday, but North’s girls yawned at that modest offensive production.
The racehorse Cavalier females blew out East Montgomery 91-21, throwing a 50 on the scoreboard in the first half and putting five players in double figures.
Freshman Special Washington had a triple-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. She could’ve scored 30 easily, but she kept passing to open teammates.
Anna Lingle had the honor of hitting the short jumper with 2:54 remaining for points No. 86 and No. 87. Her bucket broke the previous school record of 85 points that the Cavaliers tied in last week’s overtime victory against North Moore.
“We’re starting to work together a lot better,” summed up sophomore Fredejah Royer, who knocked down two 3-pointers. “Not to disrespect anybody that we play, but when we work together, we can dominate. Tonight, we dominated.”
North (8-7, 8-2) is in third place in the top-heavy YVC, so it didn’t dominate South Davidson or West Montgomery. Still, this is a dangerous team that gets better every time it hits the floor. The Cavs’ relentless defensive pressure and speed changing ends of the floor overwhelmed the visitors, who lost to North by a respectable 74-48 in Biscoe back in December.
“We stress unselfishness and we were very unselfish and played really well tonight,” North coach Brian Lytton said. “I’m pleased. I get excited any time I see signs of maturity with this team, and I saw some signs tonight. We came out and took care of business, and that’s what a mature team does.”
Besides Washington’s all-round night, sophomore Demeria Robinson scored 17 points and added six assists. Freshman Tre Allen had a career-best 16 points, Royer had 14, and freshman Aliyah Farmer was a stickback machine for another 14.
It was already 13-0 when Kiana Harris hit a long two to break the ice for the Eagles (2-13, 2-9).
North ended a hectic first quarter with Taylor Sells banking in a difficult runner, and Allen banking in a deep 3-ball. It was 28-8 after a quarter.
Layups by Amber Carter and Kayla Smith gave the Cavs a 50-15 halftime lead. North backed off its fullcourt defensive pressure but still held EM to just six points in the second half.
It nearly was the most lopsided win in school history, but the Cavs beat Monroe 82-13 in 1962.
