Nutrition Research Institute to hold free nutrition seminar throughout February

KANNAPOLIS — Ever wondered what really works to manage your weight? The Nutrition Research Institute in Kannapolis is hosting a nutrition seminar series that hopes to answer that very question.
The Nutrition Research Institute’s Appetite for Life Academy brings the latest scientific research down to earth in educational, interactive community programs.
The seminars will begin Feb. 5 and continue every Tuesday throughout February. Each seminar is from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m., in the meeting room of the David H. Murdock Core Laboratory Building, 201 North Main St., Kannapolis.
The seminars are free and open to the public. The seminar is also an opportunity to meet leading experts as they present their research in sessions designed to help people eat better and live healthier lives.
The following lectures are:

• Feb. 5
“Families Matter: Lifestyle Strategies for Obesity Prevention that Start at Home.” Myles Faith, Ph.D, UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health.
Faith will address what can be done to establish a healthier family food legacy for children, instill good nutrition and health.
• Feb. 12

“Heritable Effects of Diet: Becoming What Our Parents Eat.” Folami Ideraabdullah, Ph.D, Nutrition Research Institute.
Ideraabdullah’s research investigates how genetic makeup and exposure to environmental toxicants play a role in diet related defects.
• Feb. 19

“Managing Your Weight, What Really Works?” Deborah Tate, Ph.D., UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health.
Tate will share techniques and the findings from recent research on weight management. She’ll address whether there are proven ways to overcome challenges.
• Feb. 26

“Your Parents and Your Diet: How Genetics and Diet Relate to Cardiovascular Risk.” Brian Bennett, Ph.D., Nutrition Research Institute.
Bennett is exploring the relationship between genetics, nutrition and cardiovascular risk.
The seminar series is sponsored by Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast, Dole, NC Research Campus and the Nutrition Obesity Research Center.
