Livingstone’s men’s basketball team won 75-72 at Winston-Salem State’s Gaines Center on Saturday.
Jody Hill was instant-offense off the bench with five 3-pointers and 23 points to pace the Blue Bears (15-5, 7-4) in the huge CIAA victory.
Mark Thomas made three 3s and scored 20. Omar Ford-Bey scored 13. Thomas, LC’s point guard, also pulled down nine rebounds. Tyler Johnson produced eight boards.
Thomas’ layup gave the Blue Bears a 73-72 lead with 36 seconds left. Ethan Anderson had a key steal and made a free throw for a two-point lead, and Eladio Espinoza blocked a 3-point try by the Rams.
Justin Glover scored 19 for the Rams (16-4, 9-2).

Catawba baseball

Catawba’s baseball team improved to 2-0 by beating Pfeiffer 8-1 on Saturday at Newman Park.
John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) pitched seven innings, allowed four hits and a run. He struck out six with no walks. Sean Grant and Graham Lawing finished up on the mound.
Georgia Tech transfer Paul Kronenfeld hit a three-run homer in the first inning with Blake Houston (South Rowan) and Ethan Satterfield on base.
Keaton Hawks had a double and a triple. Cam Cockman also had two hits.
Catawba is scheduled to play Tusculum, also nationally ranked, today at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Newman Park.
Tusculum battered Pfeiffer 16-3 on Saturday, with Matt Henriksen pounding two homers and driving in four runs.

Catawba women’s hoops

Catawba pulled away late for a 51-40 SAC victory in a game played at Goodman Gym on Saturday. Leading 35-34 with eight minutes left, the Indians enjoyed a 14-0 run.
The Indians (10-8, 6-4) won the game on the defensive end, holding the Railsplitters to 22.2-percent shooting.
Chloe Bully scored 18 points and had four assists with no turnovers in 36 minutes to lead the Indians. Elizabeth Merritt and Antionette McPhail combined for 18 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor May (South Rowan) had eight rebounds.
Ralissa Nelson led LM (10-10, 3-7) with 11 points.

LC women’s hoops

Livingstone’s women’s team couldn’t finish off Winston-Salem State on Saturday at the Gaines Center and lost 45-42 in CIAA contest.
When Jasmine Murray made a free throw with 3:35 remaining, the Blue Bears (7-13, 3-8) led 42-38, but they didn’t score again.
Livingstone shot 27.3 percent and went 0-for-11 on 3s.
Tyesha Tharpe led the Blue Bears with 12 points. Murray scored 10. Kelcyn Manurs had eight rebounds.
Former Statesville star Keyrra Gillespie led the Rams with 10 points.

Prep swimming

At Saturday’s regional in Huntersville, East Rowan qualified three relay teams for the 3A state meet in Cary .
Top-12 regional finishers qualified for state competition.
East’s girls 400 freestyle relay team of Hailey Bartleson, Brooke Waller, Anna-Leigh Shuping and Meagan Barbetto finished 12th.
• East’s boys 200 free relay team of Charles Goff, Caleb Beaver, Jason Troutman and Danny Martin finished 11th.
• East’s boys 400 free relay team of Martin, Beaver, Troutman and Goff placed 12th.
• Carson’s Greg Tonnesen was the first Cougar to qualify for the state meet. He did it by swimming 55.33 in the 100 free.
Carson had two relay teams that just missed qualifying. Tonnesen, Henry Brown, John Patella and Spencer Isaac were 13th in two events.
• South Rowan qualified all three boys relay teams for the state for the first time.
The 200 medley relay team is Bonner Buchanan, Jonnie Lefebvre, Luke Rary and Dillon Parker. The 200 free relay team is Buchanan, Jeremiah Bradshaw, Rary and Parker.
The 400 free relay team of Rary, Buchanan, Bradshaw and Parker cut 15 seconds off its entry time and finished seventh.
• South’s girls qualified in the 200 free relay when Nicole Mauldin, Sydney Kelly, Taylor Kluttz and Leslie Franks finished eighth.
South’s girls also qualified in the 400 free relay with a seventh-place finish. That unit consists of Mauldin, Faith Casswell, Kluttz and Franks.
• Individually, Mauldin broke 26 seconds in the 50 free and finished eighth. She also was eighth in the 100 free.
Franks qualified in the 50 free with a personal best.
• West Rowan’s 200 free relay team competed in the regional but did not advance.
1A/2A

Salisbury’s McKenzie Stevens qualified for state competition with two second places. She was regional runner-up in the 200 free and 500 free.
• SHS’ Taylor Rodenhuis also qualified in two individual events. He was third in the 200 butterfly and fourth in the 200 free.
Stefan Knorr was a double qualifier for the Hornets in the 100 backstroke and 500 free.
Salisbury also qualified its 12th-place 400 free relay team of Rodenhuis, Knorr, Max Patel and Andrew Mason.
• North Rowan’s boys 200 medley relay team qualifed for the 1A/2A state meet. That unit is Zach Lemmon, Cody Dollarhide, Brandon Lemmon and Corey Fries. They finished 12th with a season-best time of 1:57.06.
Zach Lemmon also qualified as an individual. He was seventh in a season-best 59.48 in the 100 backstroke.
Michaela Lemmon was the lone North girl in the regional. She competed in two events.

Prep basketball

Davie’s boys lost 73-55 to Mount Tabor in CPC action on Friday. Cody and Caleb Martin scored 17 points each.
Mount Tabor is 20-1 and has beaten Davie (14-4) twice.
• Davie’s girls lost to Mount Tabor 59-45. Haleigh Hatfield scored 21 for the War Eagles. Amy Steller had 13.
Davie is home against R.J. Reynolds on Tuesday.
• A.L. Brown’s boys edged Cox Mill 49-48 on the road on Friday to improve to 7-1 in the SPC. Derrick Copeland made the decisive shot for the Wonders (12-5). He scored 12, while Tevin Stark had 11.
• A.L. Brown’s girls (7-10, 4-4) struggled 26-18 in a loss to Cox Mill.
• A.L. Brown will make up SPC games at Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
• Connor Burchfield’s 28 points kept Concord unbeaten in the SPC. The Spiders nipped Central Cabarrus 67-66.
• Andrew Wheet scored 22 as Northwest whipped Robinson 68-47 on Friday.

Bill Ford Night

Concord High will honor Bill Ford on Tuesday between games of a basketball doubleheader with Cox Mill.
Concord’s baseball complex has been named for Ford, a longtime AD and the school’s baseball coach for 22 seasons.
The Cabarrus County Hall of Famer coached the 1961 Kannapolis American Legion team that brought Kannapolis its last state title.

Pfeiffer men’s hoops

Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team lost to Lees-McRae 83-60 in Conference Carolinas play in Banner Elk on Saturday.
It was only the second win of the season for the Bobcats.
Tayron Gibson led the Falcons (3-16, 1-11) with 13 points.

Pfeiffer women’s hoops

Pfeiffer’s women rallied to win 64-57 at Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action.
Brittany Cox had 26 rebounds and 12 rebounds to lead the Falcons (15-3, 10-3).

North Hills hoops

The North Hills varsity girls won 56-25 against Hayworth Christian.
Mariah Murdock had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles. Natalie Whicker scored 10 points and had four steals. Abby Lane scored eight points. Taylor Foster scored points and had nine rebounds. Madison Link scored six points.
North Hills travels to Hickory Christian on Tuesday.

Salis. Academy hoops

Salisbury Academy’s varsity girls beat Sacred Heart 31-27 in their final regular season game.
Samantha Pritchard led the team with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jenny Kribbs had 11 points, five steals and five rebounds. Jordan McCall and Juliana Anderson had five rebounds each and led in assists.
The Jaguars (17-2, 13-1) finished the regular season tied for first place with Sacred Heart in the Western Division of the CCISAA conference.
The Jaguars begin conference tournament play next Thursday.
Team members are Anderson, Maria Capito, Ruth Clement, Madison Day, Kribbs, Abby Lee, McCall, Ivy Overcash, Pritchard, Morgan Warren and Katie White. The team is coached by Brian Lee and Luke Fisher.

College softball

Elon plays Campbell on Feb. 19 at Elon.
Elon pitcher Chelsea White and Campbell shortstop Ericka Nesbitt, who led two East Rowan teams to Final Fours in 2010 and 2011, will be on opposite sides in that one.

Salisbury boosters

The Salisbury High School athletic boosters will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in Classroom 105. The boosters are seeking officers for the 2013-14 school year.
