You always wait for the North Rowan boys to make a big run in every Yadkin Valley Conference game the Cavaliers play.
In a 66-33 win at Chatham Central (4-13, 3-9) on Tuesday night, it came in the third quarter.
After leading the Bears 32-19 at the half, Andrew Mitchell’s Cavaliers outscored Chatham Central 23-0. T.J. Bates had eight points in the period, Jalen Sanders scored six and Oshon West five.
The win kept North undefeated in the YVC at 13-0. The Cavs improved to 18-3 overall.
Michael Bowman led four double-figure scorers with 13 points. Bates added 11, while West and Sanders each had 10. Eleven different Cavaliers scored.
North will carry a nine-game winning streak into Friday’s home game against South Stanly.
• In the biggest YVC showdown of the night, South Davidson defeated Gray Stone 75-70 in a battle of the bottom two teams. Both Wildcat victories have come against Gray Stone.
South (2-15, 2-10) was led by Andrew Collins with 20 points. Trent Shore scored 16, and Davin Ball added 15.
Gray Stone (0-19, 0-13) remained winless on the season.
• A.L. Brown had no trouble with Mount Pleasant, running off to a 71-54 SPC victory.
The Wonders (14-5, 9-1) were up 36-19 at halftime, and coach Shelwyn Klutz let plenty of reserves play in the second half against the last-place Tigers (4-16, 0-11).
Derrick Copeland led A.L. Brown with 16 points. Eleven Wonders scored. Tevin Stark (14) and Tydus Parks (12) joined Copeland in double figures.
• Now, that’s the way to finish a half.
Davie County’s boys ended the second quarter on a 23-0 run and defeated R.J. Reynolds 70-56 at home in a CPC contest. The surge gave the War Eagles a 43-25 lead at halftime and they held off the Demons in the second half.
Davie (15-4, 4-3) got balanced scoring. Cody Martin and Taylor Hatfield each had 16 points. Caleb Martin scored 15, and Austin Hatfield chipped in with 13.

Girls prep basketball

North Rowan coach Brian Lytton has a play drawn up for a long pass and shot if the Cavs are down at the end of the game. He was in that situation Tuesday in what turned out to be a 48-45 YVC loss at Chatham Central.
The Bears hit a jumper in the waning seconds and Lytton yelled for his special play.
“The ref thought I was calling a timeout and gave me one I didn’t call,” Lytton said.
North tried the long pass, but it failed with three seconds remaining. Chatham Central then hit a late free throw to seal the win and halt North’s three-game winning streak.
The Cavs (10-8, 10-3) were led by Aliyah Farmer with 13 points. Demeria Robinson added 11, Taylor Sells eight and Amber Carter seven.
• South Davidson (15-2, 12-0) had no trouble in a 72-25 win against Gray Stone (5-15, 2-11). Madison Sigmon led the Wildcats with 20 points, while Madi Beeson scored 16.

Jayvee basketball

The East Rowan boys lost 42-39 to North Iredell.
Leading the Mustangs were Tyler Scruggs with 10 points and Logan Shuping with nine. Austin Love added eight.
East will face South Rowan on Friday.

Prep wrestling

West Iredell defeated Statesville 58-19 to win its first outright NPC championship.
North Iredell defeated East Rowan on Tuesday 57-24.

College track

USC Upstate’s Ross Oden (East Rowan) competed in the Hilton Garden Invitational Saturday at JDL Fast Track in Winston Salem.
Oden ran 8.57.63 in the 3,000 meters to finish 22nd for the Spartans.

College baseball

Catawba moved up to No. 6 in the national D-II baseball poll with a 4-0 start.
