The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and the county Environmental Management department collected more than 100 pounds of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs during a May 1 event.
The waste recycling event and Operation Medicine Drop was held at the Rowan County Recycling Processing Center in East Spencer.
Collected during the event were 54 pounds of prescription medications and 62 pounds of non-controlled or over-the-counter medications such as allergy, blood pressure and aspirin medicines. The medications were sealed in 55 gallon metal barrels. The barrels were then taken to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and later transferred to the agency’s evidence custodian.
Throughout the year, local law enforcement agencies host events where residents can leave dated medication so officials can properly dispose of it. Also during this event, residents were able to take tires, computer equipment, paint and electronics.
