SALISBURY — Former professional and college athletes will speak at two more Rowan County schools Tuesday as part of the Sold Out anti-drug assembly program.
Sold Out President and former professional football player Roman Gabriel III, along with other athletes, will visit Jesse C. Carson High School at 10 a.m. and South Rowan High School at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Gabriel is the son of former St. Louis Rams quarterback Roman Gabriel.
His ongoing public school program challenges students to take a public accountability pledge to be drug and alcohol abstinent. It also provides students with valuable life skills training in preparation for college and/or a job.
Topics addressed include bullying, peer pressure, goal setting, finding your passion, fitness, character, team concepts, involvement in extra curricular activities and others. Sold Out has an ongoing follow-up program through social networking and the Internet.
Confirmed guest speakers on Tuesday include Jerry Moore, former Appalachian State University head football coach; Renaldo Wynn, a former NFL player with the Washington Redskins who now works with Joe Gibbs Racing; and Roman Phifer, a former NFL linebacker for the Rams.
Other invited guests include North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby and Dwight Stone, a former NFL running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Carolina Panthers who is now a veteran Charlotte police officer.
The Rowan County Sold Out Program is sponsored by the Rowan-Kannapolis ABC Board, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and the Salisbury Police Department. Other Sold Out school programs are located in Avery, Ashe, Watauga, Burke, Wilkes, Guilford, Mitchell and Wayne counties, and it is coming to Onslow, Carteret, Wilson and more counties.
The Sold Out preventative program seeks to make an impact in underage drug and alcohol usage problem in North Carolina communities.
This year, the Sold Out School Assembly Program has reached over 25,000 students, hundreds of teachers and coaches, and countless parents through the Sold Out public schools community program.
To date, the program has seen up to 65 percent of middle and high school students take a public pledge to be accountable to their teachers, coaches, parents, and fellow students. Almost 1,700 students have joined the Sold Out Facebook follow up-program.
