Noah Holmes (East Rowan) has been named Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
Holmes hit .462 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored to help lead ASU (27-19) to a pair of wins in a three-game weekend series at Gonzaga.
Holmes (.304, five homers, 26 RBIs) and the Mountaineers return to action tonight at No. 2 North Carolina (45-6). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
• Catawba pitcher Nick Lomascolo has been named a Tino Martinez Award semifinalist.
The Martinez Award goes to the Division II Player of the Year. Lomascolo is one of five nominees from the Southeast Region.
Finalists will be announced May 20. The award winner will be announced at the D-II World Series (May 25-June 1).
Lomascolo is the SAC Pitcher of the Year. He won 10 games, led all of D-II with 123 strikeouts and had an ERA of 2.14.

Southeast’s boys won 4-1 against Mooresville in the conference tournament championship game, adding the tournament title to their regular-season crown.
Raunel Vasquez scored twice, and Braxton Rogers scored on a penalty kick and a direct kick. Michael Rosas and Irving Flores had assists.
Vasquez has scored 56 goals in two middle school seasons.
Mooresville’s girls beat Southeast 8-0 in the conference championship game. Mooresville also won the regular season title.

The second round of the state playoffs is set for today.
Carson plays at Robinson at 6. West Rowan plays at North Iredell at 6. East Rowan is home against Southwestern Randolph at 5.

Carson third baseman Connor Bridges will play at Pfeiffer next season. Bridges is batting .347 with 11 RBIs. His on-base percentage is over .500.
East Rowan softball pitcher Sydney Poole also has given a commitment to Pfeiffer and plans to make it official on Wednesday.

Davie County High Hall of Famer Angie Browder Slabach, 46, died of cancer last week.
She was a tremendous high school athlete in basketball, volleyball and track and field.
She played college basketball at UNC Wilmington and High Point and coached Davie’s girls team to three conference championships from 1988-94.
Slabach battled breast cancer three years. She is survived by her husband and their four children.

Catawba’s Carley Tysinger was named Pitcher of the Year on the Daktronics All-Southeast Region team.
Tysinger led Division II in wins (25) and strikeouts prior to regional play. She set school records with 324 strikeouts and 10 shutouts.

Kannapolis battled into extra innings for the first time this season but lost 2-1 in 11 innings at Lexington on Monday.
Adrian Morales hit the walkoff homer.
Kannapolis starter Jake Cose was sharp for seven innings and fanned nine. Micah Johnson stole three bases and leads the minors with 35.

The Kannapolis Komets girls basketball team opened play in Sparta in The Allegheny Shootout by beating the host Allegheny Avalanche team 46-27. The Komets took control in the second half behind the strong play of Alex Allen, Bailey Vernon, Kate Cole and Gentry Grubb.
Katherine Barringer led the Komet defense.

Carson will hold a basketball elementary camp for girls who will be in kindergarten through 5th grade on Monday, July 8 through Thursday, July 11, from 4-7 p.m. The gym opens at 3 p.m. There will be concessions daily. Cost is $50 and includes a T-shirt.

The winners of the 2nd annual Jesse Carson High School Band Golf Tournament held at McCanless were Joe Gragg, Ben Gragg, Rob Sawyer and Andrew Purcell.
They were the defending champions and shot 48 (22-under) with the help of Mulligans, Strings and Tee Busters.
Mike Reid, Bill Reid, Ronnie Clodfelter and Steve Fulcher shot 49 for second. Darrin Overcash, Logan Overcash, Jimmy Barnette and Ronald Burnette finished third.
Jerry Newhouse won closest to the pin. Clodfelter won longest drive.
Proceeds will help the Carson band pay for equipment and transportation.
• The 32nd annual Edgar Welch Memorial Golf Tournament for Rowan County women will be played on May 21 and 23 at Corbin Hills and the Country Club of Salisbury.
The tournament is open to all women with an established handicap at a Rowan club and anyone who has played in the tournament before.
Entry forms are available at local clubs. The $60 fee includes golf, carts, prizes and luncheon. The format is net best-ball twosome. Gross prizes also are awarded.
The defending champions are Mary Seaford and Kristi Laton. The tournament is played in memory of Edgar Welch. Welch’s wife, Elaine, established the tournament in his memory. Contact Jo Shaw at 704-636-1592.

On Saturday, the Warriors will compete in the Battle of the Borders in Spartanburg, S.C.

The East Rowan and Hurley YMCAs are offering Summer Challenge Soccer.
Challenge soccer is a program that offers a higher level of development and competition than the typical recreation program. The program focuses on developing skills for individual and team performance.
There will be 10 regular-season games and a tournament. Register as individuals or register teams. League age is as of June 1. There will be age group play for 8&9 (9U), 10&11 (11U) and 12&13 (13U).
Register through June 1. Team roster and payments must be submitted by June 1.
