It took firefighters 15 minutes to extinguish a vehicle fire Wednesday afternoon at Holmes Iron & Metal. Officials said quick thinking of employees helped with getting the fire put out.
A worker was using a forklift to move a crushed vehicle when the forklift battery shorted. The car, a four-door Sedan, ignited, said East Spencer Fire Capt. Joshua Wyatt.
The employees cleared a path to the car so when fire crews arrived they’d have easier access. Wyatt said the car was turned over so firefighters could hose it down.
In addition to East Spencer, the Spencer Fire Department also responded to the 3:30 p.m. fire. Wyatt said the smoke could be seen from the East Spencer fire station before officials arrived. It was clear the fire was an accident and fire officials knew how the fire began, Wyatt said, the investigation was completed quickly. Holmes Iron & Metal is located at 629 North Long St.
