Devore Holman has been named as Davie County’s new head football coach.
“No one has worked any harder than he has and no one has earned the right to be a head coach more than he has,” Davie AD Mike Absher said. “We’re very excited about this. Devore brings great passion, and he also brings great knowledge.”
Holman, 46, has been an assistant at Davie for more than two decades, working under four different head coaches — Mike Carter, Randall Ward, Benjie Brown and Doug Illing.
He’s been the defensive coordinator the last 14 seasons.
There were 26 applicants for the job, and six were interviewed.
Holman is a 1984 Davie graduate and played a season at Winston-Salem State.
Todd Bumgarner will be the offensive coordinator, with Tim Devericks elevated to defensive coordinator.
Davie was 9-4 in 2012. losing in the second round of the playoffs.
• Davie has named Dave Ruemenapp as its new girls basketball coach.
Ruemenapp has coached in Texas, Michigan, Virginia and Florida.
Kenneth Ham was named as Davie’s new head coach for boys soccer.
Sells named

North Rowan graduate Taylor Sells has been named to play for the West team in the Senior East-West softball game that is part of the Powerade State Games to be held at Wingate later this month.
Sells signed with Catawba.

Prep basketball
Megan Honeycutt Assey has been hired as head girls basketball coach at River Bluff High in S.C.
Former Catawba coach David Bennett is the AD and football coach at River Bluff.
Assey graduated from North Rowan in 2000 where she was a volleyball and basketball standout. She scored 1,555 career points in basketball, still the third-highest total in North history. She played four seasons at UNC Greensboro, graduating with a degree in Media Studies and English.
She was a graduate assistant coach at Clemson and an assistant coach at Charleston Southern before coaching Brookland-Cayce High’s girls team last year.
She’s married to Charles Assey, the baseball coach at Brookland-Cayce.
Intimidators baseball

Monday’s Kannapolis Intimidators game was postponed due to field conditions.
The teams will play a doubleheader today, two seven-inning games, with the first pitch at 5 p.m.
Racing

Justin LaDuke is the 2013 recipient of the Alan Kulwicki Scholarship awarded by UNC.
LaDuke drives in the Allison Legacy Racing series and leads the current points race.
American Legion

Rowan County plans to make up Sunday’s washed-out game with Davidson County tonight at Newman Park.
•Kannapolis was rained out on Monday and hopes to make up the game with the Mooresville Legends tonight at Mooresville High at 7.
Kannapolis will be home for a doubleheader against the Legends on Wednesday, with two seven-inning games scheduled. They’ll start at 5.
Junior Legion

The South Rowan-Mooresville Junior Legion game was rained out on Monday and rescheduled for Thursday at South.
Wells Fargo Cup

In the Wells Fargo Cup standings for overall athletic excellence, Gray Stone won the 1A YVC. Albemarle was second, with South Stanly third and North Rowan fourth.
In the 2A CCC, Central Davidson finished on top, with Salisbury second and West Davidson third.
In the 3A NPC, Carson finished first, with East Rowan second and West Rowan third. South Rowan was sixth.
In the 3A SPC, Robinson finished first, with Concord second. A.L. Brown was fifth.
In the 4A CPC, Reagan was first, with R.J. Reynolds second. Davie was fifth.
Local golf

Twenty-three teams played in the GARS member-guest tournament at Crescent and nine teams played in the member-member tournament.
In the GARs-guest tournament, Tom Talbert-Steve Gegorek won low gross with a 65. Jay Boyce-Edgar Osborne shot 68 for second place. Gerald Barker and Sean Whitelavich placed third with a 69.
Ralph Brown-Tommy Trexler shot 66 to win low net. David Lee-Sandy Goodman shot 68 for second place. Shooting 70 and tying for third were Johnny Shook-Jim Fero, Ernest Wagner-Keith Mason, Johnny Legrand-Carl Smith and Lou Manning-Wayne Tate.
In the GARs-GARS tournament, Don Bishop-David Wilson shot 73 to win low gross. Frank Rowell-Mick Rowell shot 70 to win low net.
• There were 108 participants in the Salisbury Lions Wallace & Graham Tournament at Corbin Hills.
The First Flight winner with a 58 was the team of Susan Morris, Phyllis Durland, Ronnie Eidson and Wayne Kennerly.
The winners of the Second Flight with a 64 were Aaron Lee, Jordan Cowan, Josh Alderman and Jared Hinson. Winners of the Third Flight with a 69 were Mark Stephens, David Ellenberg, Curtis Pressley and Steve Hicks.
Luke Allman won longest putt on No. 9. Closest to the pin winners were Morris, Jeff Moore and Russ Garland. Moore also won the 50/50 on No. 13.
• The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
Winning team members were Ricky Honeycutt, David Huneycutt, Phyllis Myers and Tim Trexler. Second place went to the team of Tommy Reynolds, Frank Foster, Harry Owens, Glen Trexler and Teva Honeycutt.
Closest to the pin and longest putt were won by Tim Earnhardt.
Benefit softball

The softball game between the Landis and China Grove fire and police departments was again postponed on Monday. It will be rescheduled.

Carson girls basketball camps will be held in July.
A camp for elementary school girls will be held July 8-11 from 4-7.
A camp for middle school girls will be held July 15-18 from 4-7.
The gym will open at 3:30 p.m. for both camps. The cost of either camp is $50. That includes a T-shirt and camp insurance.

Falcon Basketball Camp will be held at West Rowan High on July 15-18 for rising 2nd-8th grade boys.
Camp is from 9 a.m. until noon. Cost is $50 for four days of fun and a chance to improve your game. Campers receive T-shirts.
Coaches are Mike Gurley and West players.
