Jaleesa Smoot, a rising junior at Salisbury, finished second in the 400 meters in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A&T on Friday.
Smoot ran a time of 56.78 seconds. Djenne Parris, a Connecticut prep sprinter who is headed to Boston University, won in 56.64.
Smoot’s best time in the 400 is 56.13.
Smoot recently won the 400 in the Powerade State Games in 58.22.
Smoot won the 400 in the 2A state championships in May, while placing third in the 200 and fourth in the 100.
Smoot will compete in more sprint events today in Greensboro.

Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus, Charlotte) has signed with the Seattle Mariners.
Seager was picked in the 12th round after his junior season and was the 357th player chosen.
Seager, 21, has reported to the Everett (Wash,) AquaSox, the Mariners’ advanced rookie league team and will be playing about 30 miles away from his big brother, Kyle, in Seattle. Everett opened the season Friday at Spokane.
Seager’s parents, Jeff and Jody, traveled to Washington to see his debut.

Rowan County plays at home tonight against the Mooresville Legends. South Rowan hosts the Mooresville Moors tonight.
League play starts on Sunday, with Southern Rowan visiting Newman Park.

West Rowan Junior Legion won 8-0 against the Davidson Braves at Holt-Moffitt Field on Saturday.
Hunter Shepherd pitched a three-hitter and struck out five.
Shepherd, Lee Poteat, Kacey Otto and Tyler Poteat had two hits each. Shepherd homered. Otto, Margarito Romero and Brandon Walton had doubles.
Shepherd and Tyler Poteat drove in three runs each.
West hosts Rowan County on Sunday.
• Rowan County won 8-7 against Concord in 11 innings.
Harrison Smith was the winning pitcher. Harrison Bell got the save.
Bell had three hits and stole three bases. Dustin Ritchie had two hits.
Rowan plays at Carson tonight.

•Chase Labbe hit two homers, including a grand slam, as South Rowan exploded for a nine-run inning and beat South Iredell 14-4 on Friday.
Zach Tatarka had two doubles. Andrew Fulton was the winning pitcher.

The Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Rome Braves 6-4 on Friday in SAL action.
Mike Marjama’s two-run homer in the sixth was the key blow. Micah Johnson, Michael Johnson and Eric Grabe had two hits each.

Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 72-65-72 — 209 and finished 7-under in the eGolf Tour’s Spring Creek Classic in Gordonsville, Va. He finished five strokes off the pace and won $2,800.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 68-71-77 — 216 to finish at even par and tied for 27th. He won $1,064.

Appalachian State’s season opener at Montana will kick off at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 31.

South Rowan Baseball Camp will be held June 17-20 from 9-1 daily.
