Salisbury Police and fire, Rowan Rescue and other emergency agencies are at the scene of a fatality off 11th Street in Salisbury along the railroad tracks, perhaps a quarter mile from the crossing.
The accident occurred at 11:29 a.m. No vehicle was involved. The person was apparently hit by a Norfolk Southern train headed south towards Salisbury at about 25 mph, according to Salisbury Police Capt. Sheila Lingle. Police are taping off the area and investigating about nine cars back from the main engine. Several EMS units arrived initially, but left the area.
Lingle said the man appeared to come out behind from one of the other parked trains and laid down in front of an oncoming train. “They couldn’t stop in time, They blew the horns several times and hit the brakes.” The older man is believed to be from the area.
