SPENCER — After 30 years of teaching studio art and art history at Mitchell Community College, Don Moore certainly earned the right to relax and sit on his laurels.
Instead, he pulled up roots and moved to Salisbury where he has engaged in the most creative, prolific period of his artistic career.
Now 70 years old, Moore shows no signs of slowing down and is, in fact, painting his most daring, innovative works to date.
To celebrate the newly turned septuagenarian’s milestone and to introduce his most recent works, the Green Goat Gallery is hosting an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to attend the free event.
The exhibit, titled “At Seventy: The Salisbury Years” features works from Moore’s reincarnation-inspired “Quest” series to his works paying homage to the old masters such as Albrecht Durer, Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Vermeer.
In the past couple of years the artist has ventured more into the surreal realm, reflected in his bon homie paintings and his ghostly interiors.
Most exciting of all. however, are his most recent spare canvasses that weave together his skillful, realistic renderings with dreamlike imagery. Included as well are large and small life studies and several plein air paintings.
Moore earned his master’s in painting from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
His work has been exhibited in Tennessee and North Carolina and can be found in private collections throughout the South.
