ASHEVILLE (AP) — Snow is falling in western North Carolina as cold weather moves into the region.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather warning today for higher elevations in Avery, Buncombe, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey counties. A winter weather advisory was in effect for lower elevations and included parts of Burke, Caldwell, Henderson, McDowell, Polk and Rutherford counties.
Up to 6 inches of snow was expected in the mountains. Up to 3 inches of snow was expected in lower elevations.
Wind chill values were expected to be as low as 10 below zero.
Forecasters said driving conditions would be dangerous.
Temperatures ranged from 12 in Boone to 17 in Asheville.
In Rowan County, forecasters are calling for a cold day, but no chance for snow. The temperature is expected to reach the mid 30s today, before dropping to the upper teens overnight. Winds could gusts as high as 37 mph, before calming overnight.
Wednesday’s high temperature is to hit the 40s, with warmer weather returning later in the week.
