SALISBURY — The pedestrian struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train in Salisbury on Sunday was described by officials as a 45-55 year old male.
The identity of the victim remains unknown as of Monday.
According to the Salisbury Police sergeant on the scene, the northbound train had just left the Historic Salisbury Depot when the victim was hit. The collision occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m.
The victim, who has not been identified, was killed as a result of the impact.
The sergeant said that the investigation remained ongoing and that a medical examiner would have to give the clear to move the body.
Sunday’s victim was the second fatality incurred on the railroad tracks in Salisbury this month.
Jeffrey Lynn Daniels, 65, was killed after being hit by a train on Old South Main Street at approximately 12:38 a.m. on July 13.
That train was also heading north but was a freight train, not a passenger train like the one involved in Sunday’s incident.
A spokesperson for the Salisbury Police Department said on Monday that preventing incidents, like what happened Sunday, presents a challenge for law enforcement when there are so many places that a pedestrian can cross over a railroad.
Walking down a railroad track constitutes misdemeanor trespassing, but given the extensive nature of railroads, it can be difficult for law enforcement to monitor that kind of activity.
