MOORESVILLE — Humane Society of Iredell is seeking volunteers to join their “Pit Crew,” a special group that will assist in the spaying and neutering of pit bulls and pit bull mixes in Iredell County.
As part of Iredell Pit Stop, the “Pit Crew” will man booths, assist county residents in registering their dogs for surgery; distribute fliers, banners and posters; and assist in special events that promote the free surgery for pit bulls and pit bull mixes belonging to residents of Iredell County.
“We are so very fortunate to have been awarded a grant from PetSmart Charities Inc. in the amount of $30,250 that allows us to offer free sterilization and rabies vaccines to county residents that own pit bulls and pit mixes,” said Lori Root, Humane Society of Iredell operations manager. “But we need help from our volunteer ‘Pit Crew’ to get the word out and assist in signing up dogs for surgery. Pit bulls are one of the most misunderstood breeds that are euthanized by the thousands at animal control facilities across the state. We want to educate the public about this breed and make a substantial impact on the number of pits and pit mixes that are irresponsibly bred, which results in hundreds euthanized annually right here in Iredell County. The public is invited to get involved and become a member of our ‘Pit Crew’.”

Volunteers should be at least 18 years of age; but younger volunteers may assist if they are with a parent or guardian. Please notify Humane Society of Iredell of your interest by Jan. 15.
