One person dead following overnight fire in Rowan County

One person has died following an overnight house fire on Billy Street near East 22nd Street near Landis, according to officials.
Mount Mitchell firefighters were called to a house fire at 3:20 a.m. and reports say they found heavy fire on arrival and one man trapped inside the home was found deceased. The Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office then contacted Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the Office of the State Fire Marshal Investigation Unit, NC SBI and ATF who all converged on the scene.
A report from Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office indicates all units had cleared the scene as of 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
The cause of the fire has not been released as of end of day Wednesday.
“We would like to thank all agencies involved and for the incredible compassion shown to one of our citizens and their family,” said a statement from the fire marshal.
