A.L. Brown’s boys basketball team outscored Northwest Cabarrus 19-1 in the second quarter and rolled to an 81-51 SPC victory over the Trojans on Tuesday night.
“I thought we played the best halfcourt defense we’ve played all year,” Wonders coach Shelwyn Klutz said of a second quarter that put Brown up 43-15 at halftime.
Braxton Waddell led the Wonders (9-5, 2-4 SPC) with 24 points. Derrick Copeland and Tevin Stark each scored 15.
“We really shared the ball,” said Klutz, who notched his 200th win as Brown’s boys coach.
Jonathan Rucker led Northwest (3-11, 1-5) with 16, while Corey Seager added 10.

• Defense was the key to the A.L. Brown girls’ 41-26 SPC win over Northwest Cabarrus on Tuesday.
The Wonders (9-5, 4-2) held the Trojans to 6-for-45 shooting.
After a sluggish start, A.L. Brown took control in the second quarter behind Endia Cannon (13 points), Raven Phifer (seven) and Bailey Vernon (six). Sara Tuttle joined Cannon in double figures with 10.
Northwest fell to 8-6, 2-4.

Davie swept by Spartans
Davie County’s boys are now looking up at Mount Tabor in the Central Piedmont Conference.
The War Eagles trailed by 20 in the third quarter before rallying, but it wasn’t enough in a 86-78 loss to the Spartans, who are 2-0 in the league.
“We lost this game on the boards,” said Davie coach Mike Absher. “They got way too many second-chance points.”
Only five players scored for Davie (11-3, 1-1), led by Shannon Dillard’s 23 points. Cody Martin had 22. Mount Tabor (11-5, 1-1) held high-scoring Nate Jones to 15. Kenyon Tatum added 10 and Davis Absher eight for the War Eagles.
Davie’s girls shot 23 percent and fell 51-34 to unbeaten Mount Tabor, which won its 15th in a row.
Laura Shelton led the War Eagles with 14 points, and Amy Steller had nine. Emeral Gadson pulled down eight boards.
Catawba hoops
Catawba’s basketball teams travel to Brevard tonight for SAC games with the Tornados at 6 and 8 p.m.
Catawba’s men (3-9, 0-4) desperately need a win. Darius Moose (Carson) has been one of the big guns for Brevard (2-11, 1-3).
Catawba’s women (8-4, 3-1) will be heavily favored against the Tornados (5-6, 0-4).
Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys basketball team beat Winston-Salem’s Our Lady of Mercy 47-41.
The Dolphins (8-2) were led by Michael Childress who hit three 3-pointers on his way to 20 points. Will Taylor added 15 points and Eric Turnbull scored six. Ben Roy and Keegan Dillon scored their first baskets of the season.
In a 37-14 win against Salisbury Academy, Taylor scored 11 points. Childress had eight points and five assists, and Jack Fisher had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Josh Faulkner and Spencer Blackwell were defensive standouts.
Adam Drye and Sam Combs were leaders for the Jaguars.
The Dolphins play today at home against Winston Salem’s First Assembly at 4:30pm.
Middle school hoops
Girls
Southeast 37, Corriher-Lipe 25
Shanice Miller led the Patriots (8-4) with 15 points. Taylor Martin and Madison Full added eight each.
Southeast plays at Knox today.
Erwin 38, Knox 26
Jocelyn Lowe led the scoring for the Eagles (11-2) with 12 points.
Brittany Small had eight points, 16 rebounds, five steals and three blocks.
Avery Wright had eight points, nine rebounds and six steals. Shenique Pharr came up with 10 steals and added six points.
The Eagles play a big one against North Rowan (10-2) today.
Knox (3-10) was led by Aliyah Farmer with 14 points. Shelby Holden added six points for the Trojans.
Boys
Knox 66, China Grove 42
Jalen Sanders scored 24 points to lead Knox.
Corban Usry had 17 for the Trojans. Donnell Alexander and Deshaude White each chipped in 6.
Knox 57, Erwin 33
On Tuesday, Knox’s first-place boys (12-1) moved within one game of capturing at least a co-championship. (West Rowan is 11-1 with two still left to play.)
Donnell Alexander scored 14 points for the Trojans. Sanders added 11 points, while Joseph Alexander scored eight. Usry, Deshawn Troutman and Malik Williams each scored six.
Erwin (5-8) was paced by Logan Shuping’s 14 points. Austin Love scored six.
Southeast 43, Corriher-Lipe 35
Southeast got 19 points from Bryson Collins, and Austin Russ had nine points and nine rebounds.
Sandon McCoy contributed seven rebounds and four blocks. John Yang dished out six assists. Alex Yang chipped in five points and several steals.
Corriher-Lipe was led by Christian Holbrook with 10 points. Tre Littlejohn and Brandon Egnor contributed six each.
North Hills hoops
The North Hills Elementary boys team defeated St. Stephens 30-19.
Leading the Eagles, who were tied at halftime, was James Houghton with 11 points. Marshawn Hargrove scored eight, while Trey Carlton had seven. Matt Robar’s pressure defense keyed a second-half surge.
The Eagles (5-3) are home against Davidson Day on Friday at 4 p.m.
Middle school wrestling
Erwin stayed unbeaten with a 74-20 win against Knox. The Eagles are 13-0.
Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation is still taking registrations for its Jr. Bobcats league for girls, ages 7-15, and for a basketball league for boys and girls, ages 5-6 .

ER Diamond Sports
East Rowan Diamond Sports registration for spring baseball for all ages — T-Ball, Coach Pitch, Minors, and Majors — will be held at the East Rowan cafeteria on Sundays, Jan. 15, 22 and 29 from 2-4 p.m.
T-ball is $65. Other levels are $75.
Winter baseball camp
The Futures Indoor Winter Baseball Camp presented by Keep Play’n Inc, & Salisbury Parks and Recreation will be held Saturday, Jan. 14.
Registration is at 2:45 p.m. (parent or guarding must be present) and camp is from 3-5 p.m.
The camp will be held at Hall Gym and is for boys and girls ages 7-14. The cost is $25, due at registration. Interested participants and parents can reserve a spot for the camp by pre-registering online at www.keepplayn.org or at Hall Gym.

Soccer programs
FC Carolina Alliance (FCCA) will launch two new youth soccer programs this spring in the Charlotte area.
Exclusive to FCCA, these programs will provide young players with expert soccer training through an elite, cutting-edge curriculum and professional coaching staff.
The 10-week programs run between March and May. Cost is $80 for the Munchkin program and $120 for Pre-Academy.
The Munchkin program, for boys and girls, ages 4-6, focuses on developing individual skills in a fun, positive, and creative learning environment.
The Pre-Academy program for boys and girls, ages 6-12, focuses on advancing technique, teamwork and communication in a fun, positive, and creative learning environment.
The main goals of the program are the pure enjoyment of soccer, and the progression of skills.
