Area sports briefs: North, West win wrestling tourneys

North Rowan wrestlers won the YVC tournament held Saturday in Biscoe.
North scored 252.5 points. Chatham Central placed a distant second with 149.
North wrestlers finished in the top three in all 14 weight classes. The Cavaliers had eight league champions, a pair of runners-up and four thirds.
Champions were Damon Ellis (126 pounds), Brandon Lemmon (132), Parker Smith (138), Thomas Tucker (145), A.J. Chambers (160), Thomas Fowler (170), Cecil McCauley (220) and Will Robertson (heavyweight).
Simon Connolly (113) and Tyler Powers (120) placed second. Marc Gonzalez (106), Josh Mock (152), Xavier Robinson (182) and Eugene Coney (195) placed third.
North’s Giancarlo Solorzano (113) and Thomas Fowler are ranked No. 1 in 1A in their weight class.
Robertson is the second-ranked heavyweight in 1A. Lemmon, Ellis and Powers also are ranked in the top five in the 1A ranks.
Ranked second in 1A, North will wrestle against Monroe’s Central Academy in the first round of the dual team state playoffs on Tuesday. The site has not been announced yet.
If North wins its first-round match, it advances to take on the Southwest Onslow-Ayden-Grifton winner.
North is again slotted in the East bracket. Top-ranked West Wilkes, which beat the Cavaliers for the state title last year, is in the West bracket.
West Rowan won Saturday’s NPC tournament held at South Rowan.
The Falcons (137 points) topped Statesville (130), North Iredell (129), West Iredell (118), East Rowan (92), Carson (87) and South (71).
West’s Trey Shepherd was heavyweight champion.
West runners-up included Jaymes Fairbanks (132), Walt Waggoner (145) and Wood Poteat (170).
Falcons placing third were Thomas Current (106), Jack Burnside (138), Cody Eggers (160), Jacob Tomlin (195) and Matthew Choi (220).
Dakota Goodson (126) was fourth.
North Iredell went unbeaten in the league in the regular season and will represent the NPC in the 3A dual team state playoffs, along with second-place West Iredell.
In the state individual rankings, South’s Jonathan Ruiz (113) is fifth in 3A, while East’s Mark Almeida (126) is ranked fourth.
Salisbury finished sixth in Saturday’s CCC tournament.
Thomasville (182 points) won the event, finishing ahead of Central Davidson (140), West Davidson (131), Lexington (123), East Davidson (110) and Salisbury (106).
League champ Thomasville and regular season runner-up Salisbury will represent the CCC in the 2A dual team state playoffs that begin on Tuesday.
Salisbury’s Sam Murph (106) is ranked fourth in the state in 2A.
Prep indoor track
Carson’s boys qualifiers for Saturday’s 1A/2A/3A state indoor meet in Chapel Hill are Jacob Fink (3200, 10:12) and Myquon Stout (shot, 48 feet, 61/2 inches).
Individual girls qualifiers are Shirley Marshall (shot, 31-3) and Jesse Troutman (pole vault, 9-6).
Carson also qualified the girls 4×800 relay team. Members are Katie Nichols, Miranda Wyatt, Sara Safrit, Jakey Clark and Alex Hunter.
Prep swimming
Salisbury swimmers competed in the 1A/2A West Regional on Saturday, and many Hornets qualified for Friday’s state meet in Cary. Top-12 finishers in the regional advanced to state competition.
Sophomore McKenzie Stevens led Salisbury’s girls. She placed second in the 100 freestyle (56.20 seconds) and was third in the 200 free (2:03.80).
The 400 free relay team (Kristen Harman, Alexandra Drye, Rachel Jones and Stevens) finished ninth in 4:11.92.
Sophomore Taylor Rodenhuis led Salisbury’s boys. He was second in the 200 free (1:49.75) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (57.32).
Freshman Stefan Knorr was 10th in the 500 free (5:30.24).
The boys 400 free relay team of Max Patel, Andrew Mason, Knorr and Rodenhuis finished 11th in 3:52.42.
Both Salisbury teams finished 16th in the regional. As far as combined boys and girls scores, the Hornets ranked 14th.
Prep basketball
There’s a full slate of NPC action tonight, with East Rowan at Statesville, West Rowan at Carson, and West Iredell at North Iredell.
East’s teams are wrapping up their regular season tonight. Statesville’s boys clinch an outright championship if they beat the third-place Mustangs.
Carson’s girls are still unbeaten in the league. They clinch a tie for their first-ever title if they win tonight.
Carson’s boys are mathematically still alive to tie South Rowan for fourth place.
7th-grade hoops
West Rowan’s boys built a double-digit halftime lead and beat North Rowan 50-31.
West (2-1) bounced back from a loss to Mooresville to handle the Mavericks (1-2).
Kortez Weeks scored 20 points for the Bulldogs. Armoni Hogue had 12, and Jovon Quarles scored eight.
Quarles had five rebounds, and Brendon Westbrook made four steals.
College baseball
Catawba’s baseball team rebounded from an opening-day loss to win twice on Sunday at Newman Park.
The 18th-ranked Indians pounded Mars Hill 14-2 and beat Pfeiffer 7-5.
Keaton Hawks’ two-run triple got the Indians rolling against the Lions, and Garrett Furr delivered a three-run double.
J.J. Jankowski got it done on the mound with nine strikeouts in seven strong innings.
Greg Lawson, Ryan Bostian (South Rowan), Cameron Beard and Julio Zubillaga (Carson) had two hits each.
Freshman Craig Brooks’ tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth lifted the Indians over Pfeiffer.
Ross Whitley pitched four strong innings of relief. John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) started on the mound and struck out seven in five innings.
In other action at Newman Park on Sunday, Pfeiffer rallied to beat Mars Hill 10-8.
College basketball
Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) had a team-high 16 points and six rebounds in Saturday’s 66-50 loss to Tusculum.
Livingstone’s teams are home tonight for a CIAA doubleheader against Shaw.
Women’s hoops
Ashia Holmes (Salisbury) had seven points and five rebounds for Radford in Saturday’s 66-61 win against High Point.
Bubbles Phifer (Salisbury) led Tallahassee Community College with 14 points in Saturday’s 41-39 loss to Northwest Florida State.
Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) scored five points for Charlotte in a 72-35 romp against Rhode Island on Saturday.
DaQuondra Cuthbertson (North Rowan) had a team-high nine rebounds in a 64-62 win against St. Augustine’s on Saturday.
Women’s golf
Catawba’s women’s golf team placed 11th in the Kiawah Invitational. The Indians shot a two-round total of 652.
Leslie Long shot 80-76 — 156 and finished 20th to lead the Indians. Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot 76-82 — 158 to tie for 24th.
Hurley Y hoops
Teams need to sign up by March 12 the adult church league basketball at the Hurley YMCA.
There will be a coaches meeting on March 12.
Games are on Mondays and Thursdays.
The cost is $425 per team.
