CANTON — The 3A West Regional was a marathon day of golf at Springdale Resort.

South Rowan’s Kassidy Sechler was able to play, five days after being released from the hospital after a heart operation.

Sechler shot 100 and will make a return trip to the state tournament.

It was determined on Tuesday night that Sechler had lost on a scorecard playoff for the last individual berth in the state tournament, but it was discovered on Wednesday morning that an error had been made. One of the players already on a qualifying team had been listed as one of the individual qualifiers.

East Rowan’s girls started on the course at noon. The last one wasn’t in the club house until 6:45 p.m.

“Difficult course, extremely mountainous,” East coach Tinsley Merrell said. “We had some toe injuries coming into it, but everyone gave their best and they pushed through it.”

East finished sixth in the team scoring and fell short of its goal of qualifying for the 3A state tournament as a team, but the top two Mustangs, Hannah Waddell and Addison Queen, did qualify,  as they were among the 17 top individuals not on one of the three advancing teams.

The best three scores count toward a team score. Hibriten (254), South Piedmont Conference champ Lake Norman Charter (268) and South Point (278) qualified as teams for state.

East shot 290. South shot 342 and was 13th.

Hibriten’s Gabrielle Woods and North Henderson’s Lelia Meadows shot 77s to lead the way.

Lake Norman Charter freshman Cailtyn Frisch tied for third at 81.

Waddell shot 91 and finished in the top 10. Queen shot 96.

East’s KP Pfister and Jaelyn Earnahrdt shot 103s. Izzy Stepp shot 106.

State championship events are 36 holes and will be held in the Pinehurst area on Oct, 30-31.
