High school girls tennis: Hornets advance in 2A dual team playoffs; West loses close one

SALISBURY — Lola Koontz won an exciting match at No. 6 singles and finished off Salisbury’s 5-0 playoff victory against Pine Lake Prep on Tuesday.
Koontz won 7-6, 1-6, and then 10-3 in a super tie-breaker.
Addie Griffith’s match at No. 5 singles was still in progress when that match was halted. After Salisbury (15-2) clinched the win, there was no need for Griffith to risk injury or exhaustion.
The fifth-seeded Hornets, who had a first-round bye, will be right back at it on Wednesday with a third-round match in Denver against Lincoln Charter (16-1).
Millie Wymbs won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Lucy Barr roled 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Cora Wymbs won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
Meredith Williams won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.
Pine Lake Prep is 9-4.
Roarke Burton coaches the Hornets, who have won 10 in a row.

In 3A , West Rowan lost 5-4 at Piedmont and finished 16-3.
West, coached by John Brown, nearly made it to the third round for the first time ever.
West got singles wins from Autumn Yount at 1, Lucy Moore at 4 and Laney Moore at 6.
The Moore sisters also won at No. 3 doubles.
It came down to a very close match at No. 2 doubles, where Yount and Ally Suggs lost 8-6.
