Area sports briefs: Tough loss for Wonders

A.L. Brown’s boys lost to Robinson 59-57 in the semifinals of the SPC boys basketball tournament on Tuesday at Bullock Gym.
It was a tough loss for the third-seeded Wonders (16-9), who took a 57-56 lead with about five seconds left to play on a bucket by Tevin Stark.
Second-seeded Robinson pushed the ball down the floor and Rayshaun Bostick connected on a buzzer-beating 30-footer to sink the Wonders.
Stark led A.L. Brown with 18 points. Derrick Copeland scored 17, and Michael Carr added 12.
Concord beat Hickory Ridge in the other semifinal to finalize the SPC’s seeds for the 3A playoffs. It’ll be 1. Concord, 2. Robinson, 3. Brown, 4. Central Cabarrus, 5. Hickory Ridge.
South Davidson’s fifth-ranked boys crushed North Moore 84-59 in a YVC first-round game on Tuesday in Denton. Austin Hatfield scored 24 points, Taylor Hatfield had 20, and Wil Collins added 11.
Davie’s girls (3-21) ended their season with a 55-39 loss to North Davidson in the first round of the CPC tournament on Tuesday.
In this week’s NCPreps.com media basketball poll, North Rowan’s boys are ranked fourth in 1A.
Salisbury’s girls are still atop the 2A poll despite some close calls last week. No. 3 Jordan-Matthews and No. 7 North Stanly entered the postseason as 2As with perfect records.
Concord’s boys fell to fourth in 3A.
Carson’s girls dropped to seventh in the 3A poll.
Tournament semifinals tonight
YVC: North Rowan’s boys vs. Chatham Central at 7:30 p.m. at East Montgomery.
CCC: Salisbury’s girls vs. Central Davidson at 6 p.m. at West Davidson.
NPC: South Rowan’s girls vs. North Iredell at 6 p.m. at Statesville. South Rowan’s boys vs. Statesville at 7:30 p.m. at Statesville.
CPC: Davie’s boys vs. Reagan at 7:30 p.m. at Reagan.
College baseball
Pfeiffer’s baseball team beat Carson-Newman 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Ferebee Field.
Jeff Barkley, Chuck Ingram and Adam Sedberry combined on a one-hitter for the Falcons, while Dalton Lindley had a two-run double.
Catawba’s J.J. Jankowski was named SAC Pitcher of the Week.
Jankowski improved to 2-0 by throwing seven strong innings against Shippensburg on Sunday.
Jankowski has an ERA of 1.93.
College basketball
Catawba’s basketball teams play at Lenoir-Rhyne tonight.
The women’s game is at 6 p.m., with the men’s game to follow.
Catawba’s men (6-16, 3-11) are still trying to nail down the No. 8 seed for the SAC tournament. The L-R men (12-11, 8-6) are fourth in the league.
Catawba’s women (16-6, 11-3) are in first place and hold a two-game edge over Lenoir-Rhyne (17-6, 9-5), Tusculum and Wingate.
Catawba is home against Tusculum on Saturday afternoon.
Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team fell to Queens 89-66 on Tuesday in Conference Carolinas action. Queens shot 65 percent and knocked down 13 3-pointers. Danny Smith led the Falcons (11-12, 5-8) with 17 points.
Brittany Cox (27 points) and Jodie Lemons (24) led Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team to an 80-68 victory against Queens on Tuesday.
Pfeiffer (12-11, 7-7) overcame 26 points by Queens’ Dyonna Battle.
7th-grade hoops
Knox’s boys beat Southeast 49-23.
Alonzo Sirleaf led the Trojans with 16 points. Paris Hillie scored 11, and Chris Ingram had six steals.
Southeast was led by Lawrence Robinson with eight points. Austin Love had seven.
Legion baseball
Josh Graham has stepped down as coach of the Post 66 Mooresville American Legion team.
Jeremy Johnson, a Mooresville graduate and former pro pitcher, will coach the team this summer.
Johnson is head of baseball operations at Benchwarmer Sports.
Nick Stutts will remain with the Moors as an assistant coach.
Graham was head coach five years. His teams finished in the top three in the Southern Division of Area III four times and qualified for the state tournament in 2009.
The Post 66 Moors will begin play in May at Lake Norman High.
Rockwell Christian hoops
Rockwell Christian’s varsity boys beat Sheets Memorial 64-41 to close the regular season. Andrew Straight scored 22 points for the Chargers (12-9). Alex Straight (14), Jeremy Waller (12) and Nathan Hoehman (11) also were in double figures.
Rockwell will host the Foothills Tournament, starting on Thursday. n Titus Cruse scored 12 points as Rockwell’s jayvee boys beat Sheets 36-31.
Roni Boss scored 17 points, but Rockwell’s varsity girls still lost to Sheets 38-34.
