SALISBURY — Salisbury Police are investigating the shooting of a man walking along East Lafayette Street early Sunday morning.
Lt. J.I. Lanier identified the victim as Bobby Rhodes, 30, of Salisbury. He said Rhodes was shot once in the lower abdomen and flown by helicopter to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
A spokesperson said Sunday evening there was no one matching Rhodes’ name at Baptist hospital. Carolinas Medical Center also had no record of his being admitted.
EMS and police were called to 526 E. Lafayette St. between 12:30 and 1 a.m. and found Rhodes lying in a driveway. Lanier said Rhodes had walked about a half block after being shot.
Walking east toward Lafayette Apartments, Rhodes apparently had stopped where there was a disturbance, and a man asked whether he had some kind of problem, Lanier said. The same man ended up shooting Rhodes with a handgun, according to police.
Lanier said Rhodes appeared to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“We didn’t get very much from him,” Lanier said. “… We don’t have a lot of information.”
By the time Lanier reached Novant Health Rowan Regional Medical Center, Rhodes already had been flown away, the lieutenant added.
There have been no arrests.
