CHINA GROVE — On Tuesday, Brian Perry became the seventh Rowan County boys basketball coach to reach 200 career wins.
No. 200 came in Carson’s 77-43 home romp against A.L. Brown. He got a lot of help from his son.
Freshman CP Perry had 23 points and nine rebounds. He scored 12 in a third-quarter flurry, and the Cougars were able to play everyone in the fourth.
The Wonders (2-1) had topped 90 points against South Rowan and were coming off an impressive win at Concord, but they had a tough night against the hot-shooting Cougars (2-0).
Jonah Drye made four 3-pointers and scored 19 points. Jacob Mills, another freshman, scored 14. Drye and Mills had five assists each.
Colin Ball didn’t have a big scoring night but pulled down nine rebounds against the taller Wonders.
“Jonah was really good, and Colin had a really good game,” said Perry, who is in his 18th season. “We shared the ball and were very unselfish. We played a really solid game.”
Nazir Reaves scored 13 to lead A.L. Brown. Caleb Ford made two 3-pointers in the second quarter, but was quiet after that.
Carson starts South Piedmont Conference at home against Concord on Friday.
The Wonders will go to Mount Pleasant on Dec. 5.

MOUNT ULLA — Will Givens reminded everyone that he can do more than shoot 3-pointers.
The senior guard dunked to get the season started for West Rowan on Tuesday, and the Falcons hammered North Iredell 67-47.
Givens shot 5-for-7 from 3 and scored 27 for the Falcons. He missed only two shots all night.
As good as Givens was, the Falcons got it done mostly on the defensive end. They held North Iredell to five points in the second quarter to take a 30-19 lead, and turned what was expected to be a close game into a romp in the third quarter.
“We played really good defense for three quarters,” West head coach Dadrian Cuthbertson said. “We got a little tired in the fourth quarter, didn’t get as many of the 50/50 balls and turned it over some. But for a first game, I was happy with how we played.”
Elijah Holmes scored 11 points for the Falcons, while Brant Graham had 10.
Evan Kennedy and Kayvone Norman helped key the defensive effort.

West Rowan 17 13 22 15 — 67

NORWOOD — South Rowan’s boys were still in good position at halftime, but South Stanly pounded the Raiders at the outset of the second half.
Dalton Young scored 27 points, but the Raiders lost 72-59 to the Bulls (3-0). Zion Jackson added 13.
The last tie was at 9-all when Jackson made a 3-pointer for the Raiders, but South Stanly scored the next five and led 21-16 after a quarter.
Maverick Ball closed the first half with a tough drive to score, but South Stanly took a 31-27 lead to the locker room.
The start of the third quarter proved decisive. South Rowan took some quick shots, while South Stanly benefited from a flurry of buckets by Jaxon Valller.
The home team put together several efficient possessions in a row, and the Raiders (0-2) suddenly trailed by double digits.
Sotuth Rowan never could get back into it, and South Stanly led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter before Young chopped into the lead some at the end. Young scored 14 in the fourth quarter, mostly on driving scoops, He made a 3-pointer at the buzzer and joined the handshake line.
South Stanly’s hard-driving backcourt of Drew Gaddy and Gavyn Miller proved difficult for the Raiders to contain or to keep off the foul line. The game was played, at times, by 10 perimeter players, but South Stanly had a major height advantage whenever 6-foot-6 Keith Murphy was on the court.
