MOUNT ULLA — Several people told West Rowan head coach Ashley Poole that Tuesday’s game with Lake Norman was way more exciting than last year’s state championship game, but that wasn’t much consolation.
The Falcons lost a see-saw struggle with the 4A Wildcats on their home floor, 77-73, and said goodbye to an epic 33-game winning streak.
West trailed 42-35 after a frenzied first half that included 23 second-quarter points from Lake Norman’s 5-foot-11 Shehan sisters, Samantha and Alexis.
West (2-1) temporarily got control with a dominant third quarter fueled by aggressive rebounding and an attacking offense. West went ahead for the first time at 48-47 on a bucket by Makaylah Tenor. A three-point play by Emma Clarke gave the Falcons a 51-50 lead, and they led 55-52 after three quarters.
When Samantha Shehan fouled out with three minutes left and West leading 65-58, the Falcons looked like winners, but Lake Norman got to the foul line, forced multiple turnovers and scored eight straight points.
It was 66-all with 2:09 left after Tiara Thompson made a free throw for the Falcons, but Alexis Shehan’s three-point play put the visitors ahead to stay.
Lake Norman (7-0) was deadly at the foul line all night — 22-for-24 — and went 12-for-12 at the line in the fourth quarter.
The Shehans combined for 40 points, about their average. Kelsey Rhyne made seven free throws in the final quarter and scored 24 points.
Clarke scored 20 to lead the Falcons. Lauren Arnold had 19, and Thompson scored 11.
“Great game, great atmosphere,” Poole said. “We played hard, played a very good game, but we made a few mistakes, and Lake Norman can shoot. At the end of the day, it’s a great, learning lesson for us.”

South got as close as three points — with the ball — but the Vikings, who got 17 points from Kyra Lewis were able to hold on. Lewis had back-to-back layups to push Central’s lead from three to seven when it could’ve gone either way.
“It turned into a pretty intense game in the second half,” South coach Alex Allen said. ‘That’s because we fixed a lot of the stuff we talked about at halftime. We took three charges, and that was great to see.”
