FRANKLIN — Two teenagers escaped a home just as it began to catch fire and a firefighter suffered minor injuries in the firefighting efforts Monday night.

The two teenagers were in the home alone and left the home immediately after smelling smoke, according to a fire official on the scene. The two then called 911.

Firefighters arrived at the two-story home, located in the 400 block of Potneck Road, around 6:20 and began to fight the fire. Around 40 minutes later, a firefighter fell when stairs collapsed out from underneath them. According to an official on scene, the firefighter did not fall all the way through but was instead trapped in the stairs. The official said that the firefighter suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident and was treated on scene by EMS personnel. They were transported to the hospital simply as a precaution.

Firefighters were then forced to access the second floor from outside the building.  The last remnants of the fire were being extinguished around 7:30. The home suffered major damage as a result of the fire.

An spokesperson for the Red Cross said that they are assisting four residents who were displaced as a result of the fire.

Franklin Fire Department personnel were the first on the scene and had command of the firefighting efforts.
