ROWAN COUNTY – A Wednesday crash on Old Beatty Ford Road caused a bicyclist to have to be airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

The crash occurred just before 10 a.m. and involved a truck towing a trailer and a bicyclist, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Ned Moultrie. Both the bicyclist and truck were heading west on Old Beatty Ford Road when something caused the trailer of the truck to collide with the bicycle in the area of Lower Stone Church Road.

The bicyclist was partially trapped under the trailer, and crews worked to free them before transporting them to a nearby landing zone before airlifting them to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Moultrie said that the bicyclist suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The incident is under investigation by the Highway Patrol and charges are pending the results of the investigation, according to Moultrie.
