SALISBURY — The field for the upcoming Rowan County elections became clear as registration closed Friday at noon.

Incumbents Mike Caskey and Craig Pierce both filed for reelection. Challengers that filed are Shameka Jackson, Alissa Redmond, Jonathan Barbee, Dillon Brewer and Angie Spillman.

Pierce, a Republican, has served on the Rowan County Board of Commissioners since being first elected in 2012. Before that, he ran for a seat on the Rowan-Salisbury school board

Caskey, a Republican, has been a part of the board since being elected in 2012. Before that, Caskey served on the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education for a term. Caskey also serves as a police officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Jackson, a Democrat, is a relative newcomer to politics in Rowan County.

Redmond, a Democrat, has been a part of downtown Salisbury ever since her purchase of South Main Book Company in 2019.

Barbee, a Republican, had his most recent run in politics end in defeat in the race for a seat on the Salisbury City Council. Before that, he challenged Alisha Byrd-Clark for a seat on the Rowan-Salisbury School Board, losing by less than 4 percent, or 2,000 votes.

Brewer, a Republican, currently serves on the Rockwell Board of Aldermen, an office he was first elected to in 2021. Brewer, a Rockwell native, has never run for another office.

Spillman, a Republican, most recent foray into politics was running for a seat on the board of commissioners during the 2022 election. At that time, she said was aiming for the seat of Commissioner Judy Klusman. Spillman ended up half a percent, or 201 votes, behind Klusman in the primary.
