Weekend games …

MOUNT ULLA — West’s Rowan’s 6-foot-1 senior power forward Emma Clarke used a green dress to win the Miss Merry Christmas title, 30 years after her dad, Ken, was crowned as Mr. West Rowan.

Clarke also scored 12 points as the senior-laden Falcons, the defending 3A state champs, cruised 76-10 against Carson.

Tougher South Piedmont Conference scraps are in the future for the Falcons against towering Robinson and solid Northwest Cabarrus, but the Falcons’ three league games so far have been Romp City — 93-11, 79-22 and 76-10.

Lauren Arnold led West with 20 points. She’s averaging 18 this season and has 1,181 for her four-year varsity career.

De’Mya Phifer scored 14. Another senior, she could reach 1,000 before the end of 2023. She has 926.

Senior Mya Edwards scored 10 and gave the Falcons (5-1, 3-0) four in double figures.

All 10 Falcons scored. Kennedy Clawson scored her first points of the season.

West led 53-4 at halftime.

Brooklyn McBride scored four points to lead the Cougars.

Carson (0-6, 0-4) will have some winnable games in the SPC and should be able to compete at Lake Norman Charter tonight.

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s girls basketball team set a record on Friday that may be tied, but never will be broken.

The Hornets allowed zero points to the Thomasville Bulldogs. The Hornets have had games in which they have allowed single digits, but nothing like this. The final was 63-0. It was 43-0 by halftime in the Central Carolina Conference contest.

Thomasville (0-4, 0-2) has scored fewer than 10 points in every game.

Shamya Arnold started the game with a personal 9-0 run, with two 3-pointers and a three-point play. She scored 13 in the first quarter and finished with a career-high 17.  MaKayla Noble scored 15, while Jamyrah Cherry and Torese Evans got 10 each.

CHARLOTTE — Salisbury (3-3) beat Legion Collegiate Academy of Rock Hill 58-51 on a neutral floor on Saturday.

Noble scored 25 points and was named game MVP. Cherry scored a season-high 20.

The Hornets (3-3) led by 15 at halftime, but Legion Collegiate (3-4) made it tighter in the second half.

DENTON — North Rowan played without the Goodlett twins in a Central Carolina Conference opener at South Davidson.

That meant Brittany Ellis had to carry a lot of the scoring load. Ellis responded with four 3-pointers and a career-best 33 points.

The short-handed Cavaliers (4-1, 1-0) started slowly and trailed after six minutes, but they eventually warmed up and routed South Davidson 65-23.

Kriststyle Stockton, who doesn’t normally look to score, came through with a career-high 17. Dasia Elder scored 12.

Zakiya Oglesby had six rebounds and three blocks. Anyrah Mills t had five steals. Freshman Kanya Cowan got her first points of the season.

South Davidson was held to single-digit points four straight quarters.

NEW LONDON — North Stanly’s girls have played a super-friendly schedule so far, but 11-0 is 11-0.

The 11th straight victory for the Comets came on Friday in a non-conference game in which they easily handled South Rowan 49-28.

North Stanly’s 6-foot-1 Shalyn Bell is the key player for the Comets and was too much for the Raiders. She dominated the glass, swatted shots and scored 23 points.

Bell recently had a game in which she had 42 points and 23 rebounds. She has at least one D-I offer — from North Carolina Central.

The Comets made no 3-pointers but the Comets had 21 2-point buckets, with most of them coming in the paint.

The last tie was at 5-all. The Comets led 17-10 after a quarter, and South fell behind 30-12 during a second-quarter offensive drought.

South (1-5) got to the line often and made 14 free throws, but only hit six field goals.

Hannah Atwell, who made two 3-pointers and scored 12, and Ella Morgan, who scored eight, were the only Raiders to hit field goals.

CONCORD — East Rowan got down 18-1 at the start and was beaten 68-31 by Robinson in a South Piedmont Conference game.

Robinson led 42-15 at halftime.

Mary Church made two 3-pointers as East outscored Robinson in the third quarter. East (3-4, 1-3) got back to a 21-point deficit a couple of times, but then the Bulldogs started rolling again.

Church led the Mustangs with nine points. Savannah Wise scored seven.

Robinson (5-1, 3-0) lost to Charlotte Catholic to start the season but has won its last five.

The Bulldogs  are keyed by the Hobbs sisters, 6-foot-4 senior post Ella and 6-foot-3 guard Camri. The siblings combined for 43 points against East.
