SALISBURY — A man was arrested on Tuesday after police say he ran from a traffic stop.

A deputy was traveling south on Interstate 85 when he noticed the driver of a black Chevrolet Malibu on his phone, according to a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy then turned on his lights to stop the driver, who pulled over onto the Peeler Road exit ramp.

The driver of the Malibu then allegedly got out of his car and began to run down Peeler Road. The deputy chased the man, jumping over a barbed wire fence to follow him along the tree line. Along the way, the deputy reportedly noticed the man attempting to reach into a black backpack he was carrying. Eventually, the deputy was able to catch up to the man and arrested him.

During a search of the backpack, the deputy found a Ziploc bag filled with almost two ounces of marijuana, according to the spokesperson. During a search of the man’s car, the deputy also reportedly found another bag containing marijuana and $154 in cash.

Saquan Tyshawn Stevenson, 35, was charged with possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia; possession of a schedule VI controlled substance with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute; resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer; and maintaining a vehicle for controlled substances. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and given a $7,500 bond.
