Rowan game washed out

Rowan County’s scheduled American Legion game at Kernersville was washed out on Monday.
Rowan (6-4) has a scheduled off day today and returns to action at Newman Park against Kernersville on Wednesday.
• Southern Rowan (5-4) has a light schedule this week and will play Wednesday at home against the Mooresville Moors before taking a break until June 11.
• Kannapolis won’t play again until it goes to Mocksville’s Rich Park on June 9.
• Divisional play won’t begin this season until June 16 when Rowan plays at Southern Rowan and Kannapolis plays at Stanly County. Rowan, Southern Rowan, Kannapolis, Stanly and Concord make up the Southeast Divison of Area III. The fifth-place finisher won’t make the playoffs.

John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown, Catawba) pitched six shutout innings to lead the Asheboro Copperheads to a 5-2 win against Martinsville in Coastal Plain League action at Asheboro’s McCrary Park. Tuttle allowed three hits and retired 14 of the last 16 he faced.

Chris Dula (South Iredell, Catawba) is playing for the Wilmington Sharks.
Zack Russell-Myers (Davie, Bluefield) is pitching for the Columbia Blowfish.
Atlantic 10 co-player of the year Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus, Charlotte) is playing for the Gastonia Grizzlies.
Ryan Foster (Davie, UNC Wilmington) and Brody Koerner (Robinson, Clemson) are pitching for the High Point Hi-Toms.
Corey Randall (Davie, UNC Asheville) is playing for the Martinsville Mustangs.
• Brett Huffman (West Rowan, UNC Pembroke) is playing for the Lake Norman Copperheads of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.

Jerry Sands (Catawba) homered Friday and Sunday for Triple A Indianapolis and now has five homers this season. Sands has 22 RBIs and has lifted his batting average to .205 after an awful start.
• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) is back in action for the Great Lakes Loons in the Class A Midwest league after spending three weeks on the disabled list. Seager is batting .250 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 112 at-bats.
• Pitcher Jason Ridenhour (North Rowan) is 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA for the Evansville Otters in the independent Frontier League.
Catawba cross country runner Cristian Crifasi and cross country runner and tennis player Olivia Myers were academic all-district selections. Crifasi graduated with a 3.65 GPA in business administration. Myers has a 3.97 GPA in biology.

West Rowan’s Toni Lucente was named Region 7 Player of the Year for 3A public schools.
West’s Kayla Boley, Mariah Coleman and Rebecca Parker, Carson’s Alex Allen, Cassie Howard and Sarah Safrit, South Rowan’s Leslie Franks, and East Rowan’s Kennedy Lambert are on the all-region team. West’s Nick Brown was named coach of the year for Region 7.

The Rowan Express competed in the Ken Roberts Track and Field Challenge in High Point on Saturday.
Brittany Ellis placed third in the shot put for ages 7-8 and seventh in the long jump.
Bryslynn Goodlett placed fourth in the shot for ages 7-8.
Bloom Goodlett placed seventh in the 100 meters for ages 7-8. Braniya Goodlett placed seventh in the shot for ages 11-12. BraAsia Ellis placed third in the shot for ages 9-10. Also competing were Brendan Ellis (4), Bailee Goodlett (7) and BraQuan Ellis (11).
Hurley YMCA Warriors

The Warriors competed at Dudley High in Greensboro. Top-three finishers received medals. Top-eight finishers won ribbons.

A basketball officiating, teaching and training clinic will be held in conjunction with UNC Charlotte team camp. The dates are June 14-16. All games are in Halton Arena.
There will be classroom instruction, two-and-three person crew teaching, with observers and evaluators on each court for instant feedback. Some games will be taped. This is a great opportunity for all levels of officials to polish and enhance existing skills and elevate overall talent.

Two Cavalier Basketball Camps are planned.
Camp 1 for rising 3rd-6th graders is June 12-14 from 9 until noon. The cost is $40 for all three days or $15 per day.
Camp 2 for rising 7th-9th graders is June 17-19 from 9 until 1. The cost is $50 for all three days or $20 per day.

Falcon Basketball Camp will be held at West Rowan High on July 15-18 for rising 2nd-8th grade boys.
Camp is from 9 a.m. until noon. Cost is $50 for four days of fun and a chance to improve your game. Campers receive T-shirts.
Coaches are Mike Gurley and West players.

The 7th annual Carson Cougar basketball camp for rising 2nd-6th boys and girls will be held July 8-11 at Carson. The gym opens at 8 a.m. Camp is from nine until noon.
The cost is $60 and includes instruction, accident insurance and camp T-shirt.
