Area Sports Briefs: Local Elks Hoop Shoot set for Jan. 14

The Salisbury Elks Lodge No. 699 and Salisbury Parks and Recreation will host the annual Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw contest on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2  p.m. at Hall Gym,

Hall Gym is located at 1400-B West Bank St. in Salisbury. 

The event is free and open to boys and girls, ages 8-13 years old (as of April 1, 2024). 

Trophies will be awarded for first and second place in each division.

First-place winners in each of the six divisions advance to the district competition on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Winston-Salem. 

In addition to the district level, there are state and regional competitions leading to the national championships in Chicago on April 20, 2024.

HS wrestling

East Rowan’s Leah Edwards was champion in the Elizabeth Berry Memorial Tournament at Mallard Creek.

East’s Jasmyne Brown placed second. Marli Polito placed fourth.

HS football

Deuce Walker, a three-star recruit who broke receiving records for Salisbury High and played in the Shrine Bowl, signed with Georgia State. Most project him as a college cornerback.

Mike Geter, a three-year starter at quarterback for Salisbury who most project as a college safety, announced that he has de-committed from Army, so his recruitment is reopened.

Northwest Cabarrus quarterback Alex Walker signed with Coastal Carolina.

Robinson defensive lineman D’Nas White signed with Florida State.

South Davidson head coach Tripp Honeycutt is leabing to take the head job at Walkertown.

North Rowan’s Khor’on Miller had successful knee surgery. His injury proved less severe than expected.

North Rowan receiver Amir Alexander was offered by Chowan.

HS baseball

South Rowan’s Aaron Jones and Brett Morris will continue their careers and educations at Surry Community College.

HS softball

West Rowan junior infielder Riley Haggas announced a commitment to  the Univerisity of Tampa, one of the top Division II programs.

Tampa was 44-6 last season.

Haggas batted ,371 for the Falcons as a sophomore with three homers and 21 RBIs.

Haggas was one of the stars in Rowan Little League’s World Series championship in 2019.

Men’s basketball

Jailen Williams (Carson) is averaging 6.0 points per Claflin.

Women’s basketball

Kyla Bryant (Salisbury) had 20 points, four rebounds and four steals as North Carolina Central won 70-65 at UNC Wilmington on Thursday.

Abigail Wilson (West Rowan) had seven points and some key rebounds for UNC Asheville in a 73-72 win against UNC Greensboro on Thursday.

Guilford finished pre-Christmas action with a 7-2 record.

Carleigh Perry (Carson) is a starter and averages 5.6 points and 6.6 rebounds. She’s second on the team with 23 assists.

Hannah Isley (Carson) is a starter for Pfeiffer and averaged 8.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in the Falcons’ first eight games.

College wrestling

Oren Bost (East Rowan)   is 5-6 this season for App State at 165 pounds. He’s 19-18 in his career with the Mountaineers.

Jacob Cox (South Rowan) has wrestled in two matches so far this season for NC State (14-1).

SAC athletics

Following the completion of the  South Atlantic Conference fall sports seasons, the Wingate Bulldogs lead the SAC Echols Athletic Excellence Award standings.

The Bulldogs   took SAC  titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer and volleyball.

In second place in the standings is Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears won the women’s soccer and football titles.

Limestone came in third, followed by Catawba in fourth  and Anderson in fifth.

Local golf 

GARS members played at Warrior.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Keith Mason with a net of 67.86. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Dan Newell with a net of 63.84.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was David Schenk with a net of 68.56.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Phil Rollins with a net of 67.36.

Mason shot a 75 to win low gross, while Newell won low net.

Super Senior was Bill Rogers with a net of 68.38.

Warrior club champion Chris Owen shot 78-73-78, 14-over, in  the National Club Championship held in Arizona.

He tied for 27th.

Warrior senior club champion Robert Shoaf shot 78-77-74, 14-over and tied for 29th in the National Club Championship  Legends Division.

NFL

Offensive tackle Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) is still in the NFL, but is on injured reserve for the second straight season.
